Stars plead: Don't vote for BNP

STARS of screen, music and sport have called on voters to shun the extremist British National Party in the European election today.

The north west region is being targeted by the neo-Nazi group which hopes to win a place for its leader, Nick Griffin, in the European Parliament.

The BNP needs just eight per cent of the vote in today's ballot to win a seat for Griffin who has a conviction for distributing material likely to incite racial hatred.

The party, which bans black and Asian people from joining, wants British people who do not have white skin to leave their own country.

Former Dr Who actor Chris Eccleston urged voters to think twice before casting a vote for the far-right racist party.

The Salford star said: "A vote for BNP is a vote for racism, hatred, violence and ignorance. The BNP seek only to divide and destroy."

And the actor was joined by former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, one of Manchester's most influential musicians. He said: "British people can be proud that we are a country which opens its door and helps out others who need a hand.

"That's a fantastic thing and we've benefited from it for years. The BNP and those types of organisations take advantage of working class people's frustrations and encourage ordinary people to hate each other.

"Everyone who isn't lucky or born privileged should be thinking about joining together against the powers that keep them down, not dividing their vote and their voice which is what the BNP is all about.

"By pointing out unimportant differences the hate parties divide those who need to join together and vote for each other."

Mike Pickering, the Hacienda DJ and founder of M People, said: "Manchester's music and art scene is heavily influenced by immigrants to our city.

"Those cultureless, ignorant and hateful people in the BNP trade on fear and ignorance. A vote for them is like sending us back to the dark ages and has no relevance in modern Britain."

Salford chart topping band The Ting Tings said: "There are no limits or boundaries in our lives of musicality and inspiration. Nor should there be in race or class.

"The integration of cultures has made us the very people we are today, and in Britain we benefit from this amazing freedom and equality."

A spokesman for Manchester United said: "This club abhors racism and is a committed and energetic supporter of football's groundbreaking campaign Kick it Out."

I dont have a nice house and a car and I'll be voting agianst the Nazi British National Party. They are fascist, racist, homophobic, islamophobic and anti-semetic. They are not a normal party but Nazi's that stand in the tradition of Hitler.

I'm glad that people are speaking out against them and want to congratulate the MEN for standing up to fascism.

Bigkecks - Yes you can vote for whoever you like but if you vote BNP that says everything about you. If you're happy with that then go ahead, but don't use the other problems in society that other polictical parties create as an excuse to vote BNP.

Lady Foy - How DARE they tell me who to vote for??? I'm pretty sure that they are merely offering their (correct) opinions on the BNP the same way as you are offering your opinion with your message post. The difference is, your post is an incoherant, rambling rant trying to cover the fact that you want to vote BNP but need to justify it somehow by lambasting other polictical parties.

Both of you can critizise whoever you want but it dosent stop BNP being scum.

Make sure you use your vote today or these hysterical racists will be given public money to spread their filth. The BNP aren't welcome in our city and our region. And we won't stand for it. Everyone in the anti-racist. anti-fascist majority needs to speak out against them.

Stop the Nazis.

Lady Foy, you know your comments are a complete fabrication. Searchlight and Hope Not Hate have campaigned against the BNP's vile anti-semitism for years. Nick Griffin in 1997 said
"I am well aware that the orthodox opinion is that 6 million Jews were gassed and cremated or turned into lamp shades. Orthodox opinion also once held that the earth is flat… I have reached the conclusion that the ‘extermination’ tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie and latter witch-hysteria."

Your organiser also can't help themselves from giving out Nazi salutes

One of your local council candidates, Christopher Brennan, resigned in disgust at what the party was really like when he met Griffin and Mark Collet and heard what they had to say on Hitler:

"Chris claimed Collett quoted whole passages from Hitler's book Mein Kampf to a packed meeting in Luton.

And he said Collett once told him he idolised the Nazi monster.

Chris revealed: "Collett said he wanted to be just like him - a man of courage and honour is how he put it.
"He called Mein Kampf his version of the Bible and quoted passages from it, encouraging others to study it."

Please people of the North West do not be fooled by these racist cretins and turn out and vote to stop them.

I see one of the BNP candidates runs a shop called "Last Reich" selling Nazi uniforms and memorobilia. This is the kind of person your electing if you vote BNP.

I dont like the BNP, they ARE racist. Do not be fooled into voting for them as a protest against the mainstream parties, punish them by all means but vote for anyone else but them.

I voted Socialist Labour as a protest

What a big ballot paper it is !, with all those pictures next to the political parties to remind you who they are. I voted for the prettiest picture, the one that I thought represented Britain at its best...did I do wrong?

However you can vote for the “Christian party” though…..

Religion - THE biggest cause of war and famine in the last 2000 years

Ooooooo the irony……

Whether you condone the BNP or not, you should not let a celebrity influence your decision. After all, what do they know? They play instruments for a living, or play act for a living. They don't live in the real world and are most certainly unqualified to offer a valuable political opinion.

Choice A: Obtain information from both sides, form an opinion based on it, then vote for the partly most compatible with your information based opinion

Choice B: Blindly follow the opinion of some Coke head singer of a rock band because you like their music.

Choice C: Blindly follow the advice of some actor who spends his/her life pretending to be in a different reality.

When celebrities endorse parties or candidates, it makes me want to vote for the other guy.

Don't leave the fight against fascism to the mainstream political parties, the church's, the trade unions and social organizations and societies like Manchester united. The overwhelming majority of ordinary people, who are anti fascist, need to let their feelings known on mass. All it takes for fascism to succeed, is for good people to remain quiet.

Of course people can vote for whoever they choose, but the BNP spews hatred and are so much like the nazi party. Hateful rants, facist literature. Check them out carefully.
I visited and spent a day at Berkenau and since that day I will never ever allow anyone to say the holocaust did not occur.
