HOME Secretary Jacqui Smith is to resign from her post in the wake of the MPs' expenses scandal, it was reported today.
A No 10 spokesman dismissed the report as 'reshuffle speculation', but it was claimed that Ms Smith was to quit as part of a Cabinet shake-up.
Another report, said Ms Smith had privately told Prime Minister Gordon Brown she did not want to remain in the Cabinet.
The news came on a tumultuous day for the Labour government as Children's Minister Beverley Hughes and Bury North MP David Chaytor separately announced plans to quit Parliament.
Ms Smith faced humiliation after her husband submitted a receipt to the Commons for watching adult films.
And she faced criticism for claiming her family home as a second home under the MPs' allowances scheme while lodging with her sister in London.
Speculation
A Home Office spokesman refused to comment on the resignation speculation.
The affair has the hallmarks of the controversy over the resignation last autumn of Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly, whose decision to leave the Cabinet was eventually confirmed by now disgraced Downing Street aide Damian McBride in a notorious 3am party conference briefing.
Jacqui Smith told Prime Minister Gordon Brown two months ago that she wanted to step down as Home Secretary in the next reshuffle, sources close to her said.
Earlier today Children's Minister and MP for Stretford and Urmston, Beverley Hughes, announced she would leave her post in the reshuffle, expected within a week, although she stressed that was for personal and family reasons.
Former health secretary Patricia Hewitt also announced she was leaving Parliament at the next election, but also denied her decision was related to the row over MPs' expenses.
The 60-year-old told her local newspaper that she wanted to spend more time with her family.
She has been MP for Leicester West since 1997.

Look on the bright side Jacqui, wear a smile like Blears does, there’ll be more quality family time to catch up on some cosy nights in watching tax payer funded video’s with hubby .

This is a joyous day and I feel so happy to see the rather inept Jacqui Smith going as well as that supporter of a nanny state, Patricia Hewitt and the other nanny type of woman, Beverley Hughes. If anything turned the stomach it was listening to the nannying tones of what were once known as Blair's babes. Good riddance to the lot of them. They'll be able to spend more time with their partners now and I bet they're going to be really happy about it.

The Greens reject as false the choice between ‘economy' or the ‘environment' - both can be achieved together. Even Obama agrees with this--though it remains to be seen if he delivers.
The Green European Election manifesto sets out a plan for creating 1 million jobs through investment in renewable energy, housing, public transport and social care.
The Greens call this the GREEN NEW DEAL - an approach to the economy that puts Britain firmly on the road to recovery, addresses the urgent climate crisis, while improving the way we all lead our lives.
This is how the Green New Deal proposes to tackle the most pressing problems we face today:
- A new architecture for the financial system so that it serves the ‘real' economy and a MASSIVE CLAMPDOWN ON TAX AVOIDANCE by the big employers and the multinationals to generate £10 billion in revenue.
- Energy efficiency measures for UK homes, schools and hospitals to create 80,000 jobs, reduce harmful emissions and cut fuel bills. Insulate the nation's homes and buildings to minimise needless wastage of energy.
- Free social care for the elderly to improve quality of life and create 60,000 jobs. Bring back the home helps (remember them?) for pensioners to help them maintain their homes and provide a bit of company once a week.
- Massive increase in the proportion of electricity that comes from renewable sources - raising wind energy production to the same level as Denmark by 2020 would alone create 200,000 jobs.
A plan for tackling rising unemployment and the threat of climate change.
The message this election is clear - it is not necessary to choose between jobs and the environment - the Greens offer the best of both worlds.

The time has come when she is being forced to come to terms with her limitations and the true nature of the beast and its self interests and motivations.
The time to be called to account is fast approaching and a certain National Newspaper has raised plenty of money to fund private prosecutions where they think necessary. I wonder who they will turn to first ?

I know, I know. her house stuff was disgraceful, but she always came across as caring about her job. And it was nice to see a woman in the role.
I don't reckon she's the worst.
she's going now - give her a break
