Cops to get new uniforms

New uniforms
THE boys and girls in blue will never look the same again.

All police officers in Greater Manchester have been given new uniforms - and Police Community Support Officers, who back front-line cops in tackling anti-social behaviour, will get a modified version.

The uniform is being introduced after 100 officers 'road-tested' the new design in a three-month trial last year.

Most said they preferred the new short-sleeved tops and cargo-style bottoms to the traditional shirt, tie and trousers.

But the new look got a mixed response from the public, with 74 per cent approval from visitors logging on to the police website, but just 36pc approval from M.E.N. readers.

The uniform for regular officers will be a black zip-up top and black trousers. PCSOs will wear the same style in royal blue.

Supt Catherine Hankinson said: "It is really important that our officers have a uniform that is comfortable and efficient, but that reflects the modern nature of their roles."

Elements of the traditional uniform remain unchanged, such as hats, high-visibility jackets and safety kit such as body armour and utility belts.

What is the first thing to wear out on a policeman's uniform? the seat of the pants.
what is the last thing to wear out? the shoes because they dont move.

That's what my neighbour said. Not me honest.

Great Uniforms - Now is there any chance you might catch some drug dealers, drug drivers and drink drivers, in fact catch anybody committing a crime???

What’s the reason for keeping the hat? Is it to make crims feel initimidated? They are old hat...not 21st Century. Far better to get Robocop, that’s the future of law enforcement..or Judge Dread on a hoverbike. The money is there, the banks get it , we landed on the moon in 1969..supposedly. Robocop would be a much better spend of taxpayer’s dosh.

Of Denton, Tameside,

It's a shame you type before thinking, unless of course you really are naive enough to believe what you typed on this thread.

Such a shame that a general interest story such as this can be used to cop bash by those who clearly don't know a great deal.

And isn't the MEN a bit slow with this one?

The new uniform was launched yesterday, 1st of June, how come it took 24 hours to realise?

I think the reporters are too busy looking for cops on double yellow lines.

MancLad UK...the original general interest story appeared in the MEN 191208,with an issue date for uniform being April 2009.Could you illuminate us as to why the launch is 2 months late, perhaps GMP is also guilty of being slow on this one.
