TWO police officers parked their patrol van on double yellow lines - to pop into a Nando's restaurant for a chicken lunch.
The male and female officers - both in full uniform - were caught on camera leaving their liveried Ford Transit vehicle illegally parked in Manchester city centre. Their 2006-registered van pulled over on Atkinson Street close to a roadside sandwich board sign for a nearby branch of Nando's.
The sign reads: 'Nando's - Putting the chic into Chicken'.
Both officers left the van, parked clearly over double yellow lines outside the back of Bannatyne's gym on Sunday afternoon, and walked into the restaurant.
After examining the menu, they sat at an outside table and spent around 20 minutes basking in the 77F sunshine among other diners while their order was prepared.
One onlooker said: "They were both wearing body armour and short-sleeved shirts.
"The van was parked just round the corner out of sight of the pavement terrace, so the other diners could not see where it was."
The officers were eventually brought their lunch in a large brown paper bag and strolled back to their van parked 100m away on the double yellow lines.
They paused briefly as they walked back to the van, with the female officer showing her male colleague the contents of the paper bag.
When they reached the parked police van, which featured the GMP and Crimestoppers logos, the officers immediately drove away to eat their meal elsewhere.
Motorists who park on double yellows in Manchester can be fined up to £70 or even have their car towed away. Chief Insp Christopher Hill, based at Bootle Street police station, said: "While we do encourage officers on patrol to eat their lunch out in the community, all GMP officers are reminded of their responsibilities when they are parking police vehicles.
"We are now examining the circumstances surrounding the photographs and ensuring all officers are advised with regard to their responsibilities when parking their vehicles."
The incident is the latest in a long line of parking blunders by GMP officers.
In February the M.E.N reported how a cop was given a ticking off for parking his car in a disabled bay on Fountain Street.
The following month we told how an officer was disciplined for parking on double yellow lines as she and a colleague nipped into Tesco.

What perople's gripe is that if we park on double yellows, we can expect and do get a ticket. A mate of mine was deliverig boxes of A4 paper and got a ticket. What was he supposed to do walk from a Car Park with his 50 boxes?
We are getting peeved with those in power telling u what to do and coming down harshly on us when we don't yet they are no better themsleves:
The police should be setting an example not just dumping their van on double yellows while they have lunch 'because they can'. It is not the action specifically of this but it is the attitude that they display in doing so. If they do this in thsi circumstance, does that attitude acrry over into other circumstances? Bound too isn't it?

So they park their van a mile away. Then when they have to respond they are delayed.
All this started when GMP closed all their police canteens leaving the officers with no choice but to eat away from the police stations.

Here's an idea for a story, why don't you do a story on how many officers regularly miss lunch due to being too busy, or do unpaid overtime, or get there days off cancelled.
Get some proper reporting done on the streets of Manchester, go on lets have a full page spread of photographs of these yobs on bikes asking for people to give names so they can be brought to justice.

M.E.N- You should be ashamed. I echo the sentiments by stretford born blue-228 people lose there lives in a plane crash, our young soldiers are losing there lives in aghanistan, yet you want to make a big issue out of something that I'm sure we have all done. I m sure these officers will be "suitably advised" but please...Is this real news???
If these officers were responsing to an emergency with one of your family members, would you be so quick to point out where they had parked so long as they had dealt with the incident as you hoped....??Exactly...get a grip and publish some real news.

Next time they are called to an armed bank robbery or a mass riot a la Rangers, I hope they take the time to find an approprite parking space before risking their lives on our behalf.

They are there to set an example not flout the rules but as is shown with our MP's they are better than the great unwashed.
Why not park on a pay and display on Densagte and walk to Nando's. Maybe even walk to the butty shop twenty yards from the entarnce to Bootle Strret nick?

Can we have an explanation from the editor about why he sees fit to publish such stories?
Where are your stories about the countless GMP officers injuried in the line of duty on a daily basis, the offenders captured, communities made safer? Listen to the comments of your readers on here, they are much the same as with the numerous other police bashing stories you publish, the sensible people are siding with the police.
Journalists are amont the biggest crooks going, get a few nagative stories about you lot published and leave our hard working emergency service staff alone.

By simply parking on a pay and display on Deansagte between Sainsburys and the Hilto or on John Street they would not be in the news. Maybe one officer could wait for the van whilst his fellow officer went and fetched tha sandwiches.
I fully support the police but can see how they sometimes don't help themselves.

The police should set an example the public if they are not using their vehicle to attend a call.
As for comments about MEN. They lead the way as a Regional Newspaper and associated Website, I doubt any could do better. I have not read a founded comment about MEN yet. Excellent news gathering, reports and just having their finger on the pulse for the North West.
