HAZEL Blears should be thrown out of the Cabinet, says former Labour deputy leader Roy Hattersley.
He said it was time for the party to impose punishments on MPs who avoided paying capital gains tax, adding that their behaviour was 'inconsistent' with the values of the party.
Communities Secretary and Salford MP Ms Blears has come under fire for avoiding a capital gains tax bill of more than £13,000 on the sale of a flat in London. She has since offered to repay the money.
The flat was designated as her main home with the taxman - meaning no tax was due on its sale - but as her second home with the Parliamentary authorities. That meant she could claim for furniture and mortgage interest payments on the flat under the MPs' second-home allowance.
Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon and Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell, the Stalybridge and Hyde MP, have also paid no capital gains tax on the sale of properties they had nominated as their second homes for the purpose of claiming Parliamentary expenses.
Asked whether MPs who had admitted wrongdoing should be disciplined, Mr Hattersley said: "If it were me, Hazel Blears, having said that she went through a process of tax avoidance, wouldn't be in front of the star chamber - she would be out of the Cabinet.
"It's inconsistent to be a member of the Labour Cabinet if you consciously try to avoid paying taxes."
He criticised the length of time it was taking the party to take action and its 'obsession' with committees. He said: "I would like some arbitrary punishments to show that these people are unacceptable.
"It's not a matter for the House of Commons, it's for the Labour Party and the Labour Party stands for something better than this."
Senior Labour councillors in Salford were angry about Ms Blears' behaviour at a meeting earlier this month. But she has already been selected as candidate for the new combined constituency of Salford and Eccles.
Senior members of her Constituency Labour Party - which chooses candidates and can also deselect them - have given their full support. The seven most senior officers, including chairman John Cullen, secretary Ray Mashiter and treasurer Matt Mold, said that talk of a no confidence vote was nonsense.
The officers said that some members of the Salford and Eccles Labour Party had concerns but the overwhelming majority were backing Ms Blears as their candidate for the next General Election.
Former BBC journalist Martin Bell - who ousted Neil Hamilton from his Tatton seat in 1997 - is still considering standing against Ms Blears.

I reckon we need totally new candidates representing the area and not a 'Party'
Only then will we be able to elect people who will act on 'Our' behalf and not perform for their 'Party'
Let's get rid of the parties and have only independants.
Elect the best in the country for the cabinet and away with tradition
