GREATER Manchester MP David Chaytor has been suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party pending a watchdog investigation into his expenses, Downing Street has announced.
Chief Whip Nick Brown took the decision after speaking to Mr Chaytor about a £13,000 claim, which he has said he will repay, for mortgage interest on a loan which had already been paid off.
The Bury North MP referred the matter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards himself after the payments were revealed.
He blamed 'an unforgivable error in my accounting procedures for which I apologise unreservedly' for the claim.
A Downing Street spokesman said: "After speaking to David Chaytor this morning, the chief whip has suspended him from the privilege of membership of the Parliamentary Labour Party pending further investigations by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.
"Mr Chaytor chose to refer his own claim to the Standards Commissioner himself."
The suspension should not be seen as a presumption of guilt, he insisted.
Mr Chaytor, who was flying back into the UK this morning after a publicly-funded fact-finding trip to the US, is the second Labour MP to be suspended over such claims.
Former minister Elliot Morley suffered the same fate earlier this week after also referring his case - which involved £16,000 claimed against a paid-off loan - to the Commissioner John Lyon.

Whether he intended to do it, or it was a "mistake" (amazing how many MPs have made "mistakes"), he has committed an act of fraud. Anyone else would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. It's time to make an example!

WHEN OH WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SACK THESE PEOPLE ????, THEY PLAINLY DO NOT DESERVE TO REPRESENT THE ELECTORATE THE WAY THAT THEY BLATENTLY ABUSE THEIR POSITIONS !!!
LETS FACE IT, VERY FEW POLITICIANS ARE ACTUALLY DOING THE JOB TO BENEFIT THE LIKES OF YOU AND I, THEY ARE IN IT FOR WHAT THEY CAN MAKE OUT OF IT AS WE CAN PLAINLY SEE !!!!
AS A COUNTRY I FEEL WE NEED TO STAND UP AND SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH", LETS HAVE A GENERAL ELECTION, GET RID OF THESE LEECHES AND PROSECUTE THEM !!! AFTER ALL, ANY "ORDINARY" PERSON WOULD BE IN COURT FOR SUCH AN OFFENCE ........... OR IS ANOTHER PERK OF BEING AN MP THAT YOU CANNOT BE PROSECUTED ?????, ONE LAW FOR ONE ..... ONE LAW FOR ANOTHER ......

And isn't amazing just how many 'errors' are coming to light since the press published details of their expenses, previously hidden from public scrutiny. The whole system stinks and the public have been taken for a ride by so many devious and mendacious MPs. I think the title 'MP' should now mean Mendacious Pig.

However this kit is NOT supplied by the NHS and I have to buy my own - as do all my colleagues.
We do not claim for these on expenses despite them being necessary for our job.
In fact we do not have any facility whereby we could claim for this kit on expenses even if we wished to.
The lack of moral fibre shown by many MP's in this scandal is sickening....they are a bunch of money grubbing leeches without the guts to admit they are wrong - the cliched rubbish about "being within the rules" is really getting on my nerves now.......In Victorian times it was " within the rules " to send little boys up chimneys to clean them - it didnt make it right !!! Thats why the "rules" were changed !
