POLICE are hunting a radical environmental activist after a series of attacks on gas-guzzling 4x4 vehicles.
Each of the vehicles, also known as Chelsea Tractors, either had their tyres slashed or let down.
And on every vehicle, all damaged in areas of south Manchester, a note was left saying they had been targeted because 'they contribute to climate change'.
Owners of such cars have been branded irresponsible by environmentalists, for their vehicle's size and fuel consumption.
Critics say the large four-wheel drive vehicles were originally intended for use by farmers on rough terrain in the countryside.
But they have become popular with middle-class families living in cities and are used for school runs and shopping trips.
Two separate attacks have now taken place in Manchester in less than a month.
Tyres on 20 cars were slashed or let down overnight in the Ladybarn and Withington areas of the city.
Overnight on Thursday April 23, the tyres on 11 cars were also slashed or let down in Ladybarn, Withington and Didsbury. All the areas are also popular with students.
On both occasions, notes left on all the cars were addressed 'Dear road user', and blamed the vehicles for climate change.
They went on to say such large vehicles were responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, intimidated other road users and pedestrians, and used oil which was the cause of wars.
They ended by saying the 'attack' was not on the owner, but on their choice of car.
Detective Inspector Damian Moran, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "Those responsible might believe they are making a point, but this behaviour is criminal.
"It is mindless vandalism with no regard for the distress and nuisance caused to decent members of our community and will not be tolerated.
"If anyone knows anything or has seen anything suspicious during those two nights that might help us catch those responsible, please contact me."

Twice now in a fortnight. Still, at least they weren't damaged.
That said, the culprits may get a nasty surprise next time they try it. ;-)

Interesting to note the Police taking it seriously; Two in a month is hardly a "series". How about 100 missile attacks on bus passengers on the same Estate in a month? Still someone was eventually cautioned. Good job it wasn't serious, like throwing an orange carton at a car.

... or maybe they'd prefer a nice larch or poplar to hug instead.

I have 4x4 out of choice because I wanted a solid reliable robust vehicle that is capable of carting lots of weight around and doing high mileage. thats my choice and I pay for it. what about targeting high performance and tuned cars as they can be more of a pollutant than a 4X4. Size is'nt everything. These people who vandalise in the name of the planet are nothing more than mindless petty criminals.
Audenshaw Bob (13/05/2009 at 15:53)
Behind him was parked a three litre Merc but no leaflet on that car. These people don't realise that there are worse polluters than 4x4.

Utter rubbish. Saddleworth is an outlying area of Oldham. It is not in Northern Siberia. The vast vast vast majority of people living in Saddleworth do not have a 4X4 and manage perfecty well.
I always think owning a 4x4 is a bit like owning a big dog or a gun. It's a bit of a substitute for certain parts of the anatomy that their owners obviously don't feel too proud of. Know whadda mean?

I wounder if they will target high profile people or police.
I makes me laugh when the goverment and MP's go on about climate change and make/force us to recycle yet it dosn't stop the police driving around in top of the range cars and 4x4's and are totally unnecessary and another complete waste of tax payers money!

Maybe these CO2 fearing, tree hugging morons would be happier if we all lived like the Eastern Block in the fifties, perhaps we could all drive Trabants and queue up for our weekly quota of fresh meat and veg.

Two years ago people were stranded on his road one night if you rememeber but he was able to drive out with soup etc whilst those in rep cars and small hatchbacks were stuck. Good advice pal.
I drive a Nissan NP300 pick up truck and my neighbou tells me that I shouldn't drive a gas guzzler but should have something more environmentally friendly like her husband who has a Ford Focus. I drive about 800 miles a year whilst her green husband does 42,000 so tell me who's the danger to the planet now. Me or her husband? They are so environmentally sound that last year they went to Queensland, Australia to stay in an eco hotel - all solar panel, compost bogs etc but they flew 21,000 miles to do it. Trouble is you can't tell them can you.

AudiQ5 4wd: Co2 175g/km Honda CRV 4wd: Co2 173g/km
Vauxhall Vectra 2wd Co2 186g/km. But if they really want to target polluting vehicles why not go for this, Bentley 2wd 410g/km! There are many other examples.
The other point of course is that by damaging the tyres of these vehicles might result in having to have new tyres - and the manufacturing process also emits CO2.
I disagree with another poster about police 4x4s. Often these are the safest vehicles with excellent traction and essential in hilly areas (including M62 across Pennines) during snow conditions in winter. The police have a range of vehicles which are suitable for various duties.

Another contributer to emssions is flooded areas such as paddy fields used to grow rice ''Methane is derived from sources such as rice paddies, bovine flatulence, bacteria in bogs and fossil fuel production. Most of the world’s rice, and all of the rice in the United States, is grown on flooded fields. When fields are flooded, anaerobic conditions develop and the organic matter in the soil decomposes, releasing CH4 to the atmosphere, primarily through the rice plants''
Should we travel to China, Indonesia etc and vandalise the rice farms and tell the peasant farmers that they are destroying the planet? I am sure that these eco warrior students eat nut roast and rice so maybe old Bob goes around there and tells them to stop eatng rice. Perhaps they should nip down to Rusholme and tell the restaurants that rice is off the menu.

But what if you have a large part of the anatomy and a 4x4,what group does that put you in?

CORRECT, get these 4x4's off our roads, in particular, remove them from outside schools where most of them park illegally.

Well said Steve, these 4x4 owners just think about themselves, no regard for the environment or community, speeding, using mobile phones, endangering kids parking outside schools, damaging kids health and damaging all our quality of life ... time to have them stopped.
Chris O'Donnell (14/05/2009 at 12:05)
And with regard to production of greenhouse gases, 4x4s are NOT the main culprits. There are far more larger engined petrol cars that produce much higher emissions.
Peter Rogers (14/05/2009 at 12:23)
Andy, Wythenshawe (14/05/2009 at 13:39)
We are a stage when environmental campaigners can, to an extent, justify criminal acts.
The 4x4 in these areas are being used as status symbols, pure and simple, with total disregard for environmental and social effects they have on all of us.
Whilst 4x4 are not the main cause of environmental damage, they are a grotesque image of a total absence of accountability from individuals.
If this government isn't going to act, activist groups will..
