And on a brief visit to Manchester he made it clear the Conservatives believe they are on the rise.
Mr Hague, who called at the M.E.N. offices during his visit, said: "We are on the march and we intend to do well.
"The Conservative Party sees the north west as a whole as being a very important area politically. The shadow cabinet met here three weeks ago."
In Warrington, Mr Hague presented an award to Kulwant Dhaliwall for his work in India's Punjab region attempting to end the practice of terminating female foetuses.
He met members of Warrington Residents Against Proposed Prison to discuss plans for a Titan prison in the town.
He hit the campaign trail in Radcliffe with Bury council leader Bob Bibby and Michelle Wiseman, prospective Conservative MP for Bury South.
