DRIVERS faced major delays on Monday after a lorry spilled paint stripper on a motorway.
Firefighters wearing protective suits were called to the M65, near Chorley, after a driver noticed his lorry had sprung a leak and pulled over.
They soaked up the spill and waited for officers from the Environment Agency and the Highways Agency to carry out checks.
The spillage, which happened on the eastbound carriageway, near Junction 2, at about 11am, caused delays on the M61.
A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said about 100 litres of dichloromethane, which is widely used as a paint stripper and degreaser, spilled from the lorry.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said the carriageway was reopened at 1.30pm.

Several years ago, I was on my way home from Bolton Institute as it was then and there was a diesel spill on St Peters way and mine and several other cars almost lost it completely, whoever spilt it just scarpered so they wouldn't get fined.
I hope the environmental agency don't come down too hard on the driver.
