Brawl bar may be shut down

A BAR in Oldham could be closed down after a mass brawl left three men in hospital.

Brownz Bar, on Yorkshire Street, was having its licence reviewed today under emergency powers used for the first time by police in the town.

Oldham council's licensing panel was meeting to discuss whether or not to revoke the bar's licence. It has been closed all weekend following the brawl in the early hours of Friday.

Police were called there at 2.45am after reports of fighting in the street. Officers are studying CCTV footage of the incident.

Three men - all aged in their 20s - were found injured.

One had a slash wound to the face, another a four inch-long cut to his lip and the third suffered a deep cut to his back. All three were taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital, although their injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Det Insp Chris Bridge, of Oldham CID, urged witnesses to call 0161 856 8951 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

The more I hear and read about Oldham just makes me so glad that I don't and never did live in the town.

When I saw the headline for this I thought it might be Oldham. Although my postcode is Oldham thankfully I live in a rural spot well outside the place. I rarely shop or go into the town these days, I much prefer Ashton under Lyne which has better markets and much less feeling of aggression and racial type gangs roaming about. I think Oldham is a prime example of a badly managed council, executive, and multiculturism at its worse.

I have to agree with Frostee, I too unfortunately have have an OL postcode but live well away fom the place. I did venture there a week a two ago but didn't stay long as I didn't feel comfortable and this was on a Monday afternoon. I hadn't been there for years and it will be a long time before, if ever I visit there again. Being a Mancunian, therefore that is my preffered place to shop.

I thought exactly the same as Frostee, Just knew it would be Oldham! without being dramatic the place is out of control & the cctv footage of a Friday & Saturday night on Yorkshire St will prove it. About time positive action is taken against irresponsible bar owners who make a fortune before kicking out hundreds of drunken half wits to battle it out with the police.

the only time i see oldham is when ,cops with cameras is on tv.why shut the pub down,if it happened on the street,,,,you wouldnt close a kebab shop down if it was outside there or inside,,,,,,,,leave the pubs alone as there,,, all closing every day,,

OLDHAM IS JUST A TOWN FULL OV INBREADS. THAT DONT GIVE A DAM TO ALL PEOPLE THAT WOULD JUST LIKE A GOOD NIGHT OUT.

Oldham used to be a great night out. It sounds it has gone down hill though.

However, is any different to Rochdale, Middleton or indeed most places these days?

Oldham's problems are not unique, but not helped by the fact that the council appear to have tried to keep all the pubs, clubs and fast food outlets together on Yorkshire St.by freely issuing licences! There are very few elsewhere in the town centre,therefore we have this weekly parade of idiots falling out of one place and straight into another!They don't even have to walk too far.Perhaps it's time the council refused licences to problem establishments.
As for Will 60, there may be some inbreds,as I'm sure there are in Tameside, but most of us can spell!

The difference is that a kebab shop serving full customers more kebabs isn't going to lead to the customers to go out and fight about it. Responsible serving is the very backbone of the alcohol industry and is the very reason why any Tom, Dick or Harry can't sell Booze. Publicans make plenty of money from selling drink to people who shouldn't be sold it and unfortunately have to take some responsibility as Licensee. There are plenty of pubs around the country where stuff like this would never happen, due to a responsible landlord/lady
