Three people were taken to hospital after the Metroshuttle bus hit one of the telescopic poles at St Mary's Gate, close to Marks and Spencer.
Their injuries were described as 'minor' but council bosses have ordered an investigation.
The bus was left with a hole in its bumper and a flat tyre after the collision.
Metroshuttle services, which carry passengers across the city for free, have sensors which lower the bollards - but it is not the first time there has been an accident involving the buses.
Last November a Metroshuttle bus hit the bollards and six passengers, including a six-year-old girl with a broken elbow, were taken to hospital.
Emergency service vehicles are also fitted with the sensors but last December a £330,000 fire engine was taken off the road after it crashed into bollards around the corner on Corporation Street.
A number of cars - which are not permitted to pass over the bollards - have also been badly damaged by drivers trying to enter the restricted zone.
Manchester council says it is now reviewing the role of the bollards, which were installed two-and-a-half years ago.
City centre councillor Elaine Boyes was passing by shortly after the latest incident.
She said: "I'll be meeting transport officials to get to the bottom of this. I actually think the bollards are a good idea but we can't have this happening. What would have happened if there were more people on the bus?"
Coun Richard Cowell, confirmed an investigation was under way.
He said: "As part of this we will need to speak to the Metroshuttle bus driver and other witnesses as well as reviewing any CCTV footage. We will also look at the computer systems that control the rising bollards to see if they can provide any information leading up to the incident.
"The bollards are part of a vital safety scheme which we implemented around St Mary's Gate and Corporation Street, which had become a hotspot area because of the high number of injuries to pedestrians.
"As a result there has been an 87 per cent reduction in collisions in that area since the bollard scheme was implemented and fully operational."

Any council worth its salt would have had an investigation a long time ago, but not in Manchester we have Manchester Cit Council. I'm very surprised they have not waited until they have filled up Southern Cemetary with the casualties before acting.

I remember when it was buses only along this stretch, it taking me 15 minutes to get from the Printworks to the bus stop outside Boots due to cars causing a traffic jam on a bus street. So what other way is there to do it?
I can think of a good one. Open the streets up again and install cameras and any car caught going through gets a £200 fine. The car owner gets the fine regardless of who is driving and its up to them to recover it from whoever was driving in case they start the "it wasn't me" excuse.

as for this it looks like a fault with the sensors.

I use this road before 8am every morning saving at least 15mins of time! Hence, less traffic standstill=less pollutants!
However, the First buses that turn left out of st marys gate and onto cross street despite the lights being red does not help! That's what causes delays and traffic hold ups! Inconsiderate bus drivers!

typical overreaction and hyperbole from a poor motorst denied their percieved right to go wherever they want and the rest of us get out of the way. no one has been killed and injuries are massively reduced since the bollards were introduced to keep cars off this small stretch of road

Surely they should raise but not ever make contact with anything, like a shutter door with a laser system. They raise aa certain height, detect that a veh is there and then stop.
I am sure everyone has seen the ones in Manchester on Cross St / Corporation St, I think they are very dangerous.

Your comment makes no sense as regards to this article. Also Pedestrians have a right of priority on the roads...If I remember correctly? That is why cars are supposed to give way HA HA HA at Zebra crossings.
stockportbird, Stockport (21/03/2009 at 15:53)
And that comment about roads being for cars and pavements for 'people'. If that's your attitude, how are pedestrians supposed to cross the road? Are you going to now demand that Manchaceser Council spend thousands of pounds building bridges to they don't get in an angry drivers way?

as you say cars are tougher than people; this is most likely why when cars were allowed onto the roads with the rest of us a number of rules governing their use were put in place, to help ensure they were used safely. sections 204 to 225 of the highway code may be worth re-reading in case anyone has forgotten the responsibilities they accepted when they were awarded the privilige of using a motor vehicle
