A TRAINSPOTTER was ordered to stop taking pictures on a station platform because he might pose a `security risk.'
Edmund Tan, a retired chartered accountant, was approached by a Virgin Trains worker at Macclesfield. She demanded he put his cameras away.
The company says there is a ban on anyone taking pictures or filming at stations without permission because of `security concerns' - which includes fears about possible terrorist attacks. Footage shot by Mr Tan shows the confrontation, which ends with him pleading: "But I'm a trainspotter!”
Mr Tan, of London Road, Prestbury, later said: “I was amazed. In the past I have always taken photos of trains on the platform. The member of staff came over and told me to turn the camera off because I had not asked permission. She was very rude.
Abusive
“When I asked if I could have permission she said 'No'. I had asked her to be quiet because I was trying to film and she said I had been abusive.
“I have never heard anything like it. What if genuine tourists just want to take pictures of their travel – will they be rudely told off as well?
“I love trains. I have more than 200 model trains at home.”
The showdown took place at Macclesfield station last Sunday. Mr Tan dropped off his daughter Jennifer, 22, to catch a train to London just before 4pm. Her father had agreed to drop her off and take the opportunity to take pictures of trains.
A Virgin Trains spokesman confirmed that the incident was recorded on the station log.
He said: “Mr Tan was advised not to take photos at the station without permission. He was then told he could not have permission.
“These rules apply to all stations. They are private property and it is reasonable that people as a courtesy should check-in before taking photos.
Security
“It also helps ensure safety and security, both of the people taking the pictures and of the general public.”
When asked to explain what security risk might be posed by a trainspotter, the spokesman added: “There are a number of issues around security. They could include things like terrorism or the security of the station – for example, we’ve had some burglaries at Macclesfield station.”
Union bosses claimed earlier this week that a leading rail firm was planning to ban trainspotters from its stations under moves to crack down on faredodgers.
The Transport Salaried Staffs Association said its officials were told at a meeting that the ban was being planned by National Express on its east coast line. But bosses at National Express strongly denied the claim and said platform passes would be issued to trainspotters.

Yet the terrorsists are still winning as terror is prevalent. A man can no longer take pictures of trains, we can't take liquids on planes et. Our civil liberties are being eroded every day.

Is it just me or is this terrorism thing just an excuse to quell the civil liberties of the majority? This bloke is innocent but his character has been unfairly judged in that he might be a potential terrorist. I would be suing if I were him.
We didn't seem to have all these laws when the IRA were setting off bombs in the UK did we? But now this 'war on terror' is used to 'justify' any new law infringing civil iberties.
Councils are on an ongoing project to photograph every household in their borough for 'council tax assesment'. They are taking photographs of private property (just as in teh comment by the official at Macclesfield Station). Can we ban them from doing this under similar law?
This bloke talks about having people's permission when taking a photograph that they might inadvertently appear in. Does this apply if I take aphotograph at Trafalgar Square, at a football match. I am going to see U2 in Barcelona. If any photograhper takes a photograph of the crown and I think I am in it I will don a Virgin Trains uniform and approach him saying that he didn't have permission to take my photograph.
This country is no better than Russia in the seventies.
You are not allowed to say and do certain things, they ban everything, we have the largest DNA databse in the world, more cctv than anywhere, more email and phone snooping etc and the UN has just said that we were complicit in torture and are on eof the worst offenders agaisnt civil liberties. How did we let it get to this?

Fact is, terrorist cowards do this kind of thing and Virgin staff are only trying to protect us all from terrorism. If God forbid we had another Madrid style massacre, then everyone would be complaining that Virgin staff should of been on the lookout at ground floor level.
I think all the opposers to this action who are making light of it should stop and think about it properly and go and moan/oppose something else that actually deserves to be ridiculed.

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Yes very suspicious charachters in their anoraks.
Better not interfere with Thomas Tank Engine steam train rides. Will the hundreds of Thomas backpacks be banned,in case one of the children is carrying explosives?
Yes train staff as to what might constitute suspicious behaviour.
Here you fall right into what people call the loony PC BRIGADE.

And what difference does that make to anything? A council house is public property which is leased to the occupier, does the same principle apply. If you are trying to imply that this wouldn't have happened if the station had been controlled by our lovely benevolent government rather than a nasty private company, then I'm afraid you're deluded.
"Their trains, the tracks, the stations, signal centres etc are all PUBLIC PROPERTY and Virgin Trains would do well to remember that."
The trains aren't. Next you'll be saying that because I drive my car on public roads that my car is public property too.
This is a civil liberties issue and it's far too important to be used as an excuse to promote silly socialist economics.

Spot on. The authorities really got to stop doing stupid things like this, stop the paranoia and carry on with our lives. It doesn't help that every time something goes wrong, someone has to be blamed either. The blame culture (blaming doctors for not saving someone's life, blaming the police for not stopping a terrorist attack) helps no-one.
Jay: "ah this country goes futher backwards every day!
i wonder what will be next from our glorious unelected dictator?"
Are you implying this is a direct order from GB, Jay? Your paranoia knows no bounds!

I think in this case it was probably another Jobsworth and one of the increasing armies of Jobsworths that now seem to plague our society.
