ITV Granada and Coronation Street will not be moving to Salford Quays.
The decision follows a dramatic breakdown this week in talks about transferring staff from the current Quay Street HQ in Manchester city centre to the Media City development.
ITV chief operating officer John Cresswell told staff they would stay at their current workplace for the "foreseeable future".
He said: “Negotiations between ourselves and the MediaCity developers, the Peel Group, have broken down.
“The Peel Group has dramatically scaled back its financial commitment to the ITV element of the project, and as a result we will be remaining at Quay Street for the forseeable future.”
ITV had been moving forward with plans to move Coronation Street cobble-by-cobble to a new location at Trafford Wharfside, across the water from the new BBC North HQ at MediaCity.
Terminated
But a major shift in Peel’s position in recent days in relation to the ITV plans is understood to have made the transfer economically unviable.
ITV have now 'terminated' negotiations with Peel, with insiders saying the figures simply no longer added up.
Mr Cresswell added: “Our aim throughout this process has been to safeguard the future of Coronation Street and get ourselves a much better working environment.
“That means our priority will be to ensure that Quay Street is fit for purpose. In the coming months we’ll be taking a detailed look at the site and deciding what actions we need to take to ensure that we can continue to produce top quality programmes in Manchester.
“It’s a pity that negotiations over Salford have had to end in this way, but it does mean we can now focus on carrying on the proud tradition of production at Quay Street.”
Plans had been drawn up to build a near identical Weatherfield exterior set plus new studios. There were also talks about sharing resources with the BBC.
But a major shift in the goalposts over the finance of the deal has led to the transfer being scrapped.

Do you seriously think Coronation St portrays a modern and progressive image of Manchester.
Manchester's music is progressive and Mr Manchester himself Tony Wilson did his level best to make Manchester a progressive City that competes with other second cities such as Milan, Barcelona and Hamburg but you're telling me Kevin Webster et al adds value to Manchester....

From your first posting you infer that all Londoners have low intelligence because their image of the north and Manchester is created by them watching Corrie.
Soaps are there to sell products, Eastenders excepted (waste of licence payers money) so they are cheaply made and slightly entertaining to grip the viewer until the adverts come on, it is the same the world over. Mr Manchester (Late great Tony Wilson) of Salford did a lot for the region so does the local football team putting Manchester on the world wide map, thse are the things that encourage intelligent people to the region not soap watchers. I too had the mis-fortune to stay down in London, but I just laughed off their backward thinking and rejoiced in the richness of the northern wit, homour and far greater intelligence.

Anyone (not just Londoners / Southerners) who watch Corrie has low intelligence, thats why it's a soap opera they have replaced religion as the opiate for the masses, soaps and Hello and OK and Jade Goody and all thats trash now occupy the red tops and low brow values. Thats my opinion. I used to watch it when I was younger, it was a shame when Ernie Bishop got shot I must admit. But it is not a progresive show it does little for Manchester. This is not a North South debate. Corrie is backward TV and hinders the progressive nature of Manchester. It is not how I would market the City. Please don't tell me it reflects modern Manchester...i think it damaged us for too many years. If this region wants progress then we ditch Corrie and GTV needs to go to MediaCity..
Birmingham have survived the loss of Crossroads. Move on !!

References to Manchester or Salford were rarely mentioned. As time went by the occasional 'Whitefield' or 'Oldham' or 'Knutsford' and other local places would get a mention when it became fairly obvious just what city 'Weatherfield' was connected to. Now they make no bones about it being part of Greater Manchester. Like previously said, it's pure escapism and anyone who tries to take it seriously should get out more. The only flaw in my opinion are the many non-Mancunian accents (seems to be a load of daft yokel Yorkshire accents on the show) but I guess this is a legacy of it's 'anytown up north' Granadaland beginnings.
