A 20-YEAR-OLD who almost blinded a man in a bar fight has been locked up for five and a half years.

Alexander Barlow, of Victoria Road, Offerton, had been drinking in the Queens pub in Bredbury, Stockport, when he became involved in a fight with a number of men.

During the fracas, he produced a cosh and hit one of them across the face and eye, then turned on a barmaid who tried to intervene.

The two victims were taken to Stepping Hill Hospital.

The 30-year-old man, who was hit in the eye, has not fully recovered his vision and is still receiving treatment four months after the incident last November.

Barlow, who was arrested on December 15, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and common assault at Manchester Crown Court.

He will serve his sentence at a Young Offenders' Institution.

Det Con Richard McCorry, from Stockport CID, said: "Barlow went to the pub that night with a dangerous weapon. As a result of his actions one of his victims may never fully recover his sight.

"I hope today's sentence is a warning to people who think it is acceptable to carry weapons."
