Simon Kenyon illegally cut off the tails of the Jack Russell pups, who were only a few days old, in a botched DIY operation at his home.
He mistakenly sliced through the vertebrae leaving the bone exposed and two of the pups needing surgery, a court heard.
Kenyon, 25, of Hartshead Avenue, Ashton under Lyne, claimed he was selling the pups for £400 to a farmer who wanted the tails docking first.
He said he researched ways to perform the amputation on the internet before carrying out the crude surgery with a pal.
A friend held the dogs down on a table while Kenyon docked the tails.
Kenyon, an unemployed labourer, was living at girlfriend Sheryl Beckwith's home in Dean Street, Ashton, at the time of the incident in July last year.
RSPCA inspectors visited the house after a tip-off.
Two pups had to undergo surgery and the other three dogs were immediately re-homed.
Kenyon, who had claimed he didn't know tail docking was against the law, was disqualified from keeping dogs for two years and ordered to pay £250 costs.
He was also put under supervision for 12 months and ordered to attend a Think First programme to help prevent him re-offending.
This is understood to be the first case of its kind in the north west since tail docking was outlawed in England on April 6, 2007.
Only certain working dogs and those requiring it for medical treatment are exempt from the ban.
Speaking after the sentencing, RSPCA Insp Vicki McDonald said it was a `satisfactory' result.
She said: "It should also serve as a warning to othersconsidering this that we do take it seriously and will prosecute." Tweet

Tails are meant for wagging not chopping off & this man should have been banned for life from keeping any animals, and what about the chap who wanted the tails docking. Why hasnt he been 'done' for aiding & abetting as well as the person who held the pups down. Come on RSPCA, if you are going to do a job, do it properly. They all should have been in the 'dock' together. A nice hefty fine would have helped as well to pay for vets bills incurred
Anyone these days owning a dog with a docked tail must feel awkward, even though they used to do it all the time 'humanely'. That said, why would anyone want a dog with a docked tail anyhow?? You may just as well hang a sign around your neck to say you don't care about kindness to animals. How can you feel good, walking a dog that has been maimed in this way? I'd be embarrassed.
DIY tail docking is the inevitable result of the RSPCA's campagin to end properly done tail docking by vets who use pain killers. As usual the RSPCA cause far more suffering and animals who would have been treated by vets and have good homes end up being part of the 50% of all animals that go to the RSPCA that are put down.
So well done RSPCA for increasing pain and suffering and destroying good homes.

Funny old world, a tragic chap who has the urge but not the means to look after animals is banned for life. The other has the means but no real urge to care can have them again in a couple of years.

those poor puppies must of suffered severve agony,this apparent human being should be tested on instead of animals as a punishment,let him have a bit of suffering too,how or why would you do a thing like this to some defenceless pups,its just pure evil.
What kind of subhuman scum does this to a puppy. Why to people feel the need to dock tails anyway, I have a jack russell thats 18 months old now and love seeing her tail wagging when she see's me. Anyone doin this should be banned for life.
