When one of the officers carried on the chase by foot the man turned around and pointed what looked like a small handgun at him, saying: "Do you want shooting?"
The officer stopped the chase and called in armed backup, but the suspect had fled towards Ardwick Railway Station and officers were unable to find him.
The thief was of mixed race, about 5ft 10 with short, dark hair and wearing a black jacket and dark trousers.
The car, registration ML05 ZWK, had been stolen earlier from Dalbury Drive, Collyhurst.
Det Sgt Rob Cousen, of Longsight CID, said: "This must have been a terrifying moment for the officer. He did exactly the right thing in stopping the pursuit at that moment and immediately calling for armed back-up.
"We now want people living near the railway tracks in Longsight to think back to the early hours of this morning. Did they hear a noise in their back garden or see someone running along the railway tracks, but thought nothing of it at the time? "
Also, this man may have tried to get rid of the gun or some of his clothing, so we want people in that area to check in their back gardens for us.
"We also need people to tell us if they saw the car after it was stolen.
"This offender is clearly dangerous and needs to be caught before he threatens anyone else with a firearm."
Officers are appealing to anyone who saw the car being driven before it got onto Alan Turning Way, or who saw a man fitting his description in the area is to call Longsight CID on 0161 865 4269 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Tweet

Time to come into the 21st century and arm the police. And stop thinking like victorians.
so next timme people complain about the police not caring of trying etc etc please remember. . . when was the last time you had a gun pointed at you whilst at work? or threatened with a broken bottle, knife etc etc. Areally difficult job is now becoming virtually impossible.
Well done to Officers involved- thanks.
rubbish .. to all its not very often the police get threatened with guns , knives or any other weapon . yes they may get the odd smack in the mouth .. but nothing like is expressed here . if they dont like the thought of this then change jobs .. thats what they are there for to fight crime .. not turn up when its all over , fly around in hellicopters .. they have more weapons then most , along with more powers to prevent crime and catch criminals .. so stop bitching about it and just get on with what your payed to do ..
r8, what a ridiculous comment. It would appear the officer and everyone else did just get on with the job they are paid to do, so stop trying to create your own little story.
Mmm, stolen car, the officers find it, the officers chase it, they then chase the man on foot who pulls a gun on them and threatens them, and then they still continue to look for him. What more do you want?
Ignoring r8's comments, it's about time our police officers had the means to blast these toerags to somewhere else in the universe. Given the crime trends and the sheer absence of any scruples by the criminal fraternity, the day will come. I will applaud every gun-toting scumbag being sent to face his maker.
r8 your an idiot- for your information barely a day goes by when a police officer is not assaulted and or threatened with a weapon which could at best change there lives forever or at worse kill them. The fact is that stories like that generally don't get into the press, they don't sell newspapers instead all you hear about is a fella and his payout, or some bloke bringing an award to his local.
shame on you r8.
r8's comments make as little sense as his spelling, punctuation and grammar. There are very few of us who will ever find out what they would do in that situation, a gun pointed directly at you and a man threatening to shoot you and I for one count myself as lucky in my job I never will. A well done to the Officers involved
Bean of the yard, stalybridge
as a doorman working in manchester we get threatened evrynight with bottles knives and the odd shotgun pointed at us
If the police were armed then I doubt if this lowlife would have pulled a gun on them, I personally would have wanted the police to shoot him at the first oportunity for stealing the car.
they found the car because he abandoned it , and what was pointed at him looked like a small hand gun , ??
not that it was .. he may have dumped some of his clothes and what may have been a gun , so can the public look for these items , and he fled towards the station ? they dont have a clue .. the only real crime here is that someone nicked a car and dumped it , not me making the story .. and the police couldnt find him ..
but i'm sure he will get promoted for his bravery and awarded to . for what chasing a car theif he couldnt catch ..
r8's comments have confirmed my suspicions about the folk on the other side of the Pennines. Idiot.
All police officers in the u.k should be armed, dosnt matter what kind of policeman or women you should carry guns. because if you dont shot them first they are going to shot you.some police chief you guys got ha.
r8, Wher does it say the officer is "Bitching about it" ? and he was just "doing his job", pursuing a stolen car, then pursuing the driver on foot. Do you really think he, or anyone else is going to continue chasing a scumbag and risk not seeing his family again ? And dont give me that nonsence about not being a real gun. How would he know, how would you know ? I remember, quite clearly, officers being shot at whilst pursuing a car through Salford not so long ago.
Donald Duck, if you think the police should be able to carry guns for their own protection, what about the rest of us? Are we all expendable if we aren't in uniform?
R8, I know the officer involved personally, he has not made a song and dance about it and was in fact back in work the following day.
He will not get a promotion for this as that isn't how the police force works, what i suggest is that you actually learn a little something about the topic your commenting on.
[Black flag]dont get angry,if you was that policeman wont you wish that you had a gun to protect your self in a sittuasion like that.their chief has allready gave them body armour where is their gun.
donald duck, I'm not particularly bothered if the police are able to carry guns routinely (for practical reasons I think it's a bad idea, but in principle I don't object).
What I do object to is the police being able to carry guns in the street but the general public not being able to. If you have a good reason why the law should be different for the police, then let me hear it, until then, I'll stick with the principle that we should all be equal under the law.
Do consider the opinions of the Police. You'll find that there is a mixed view amongst Officers on carrying guns, there's a number of Officers not wanting to. Partly due to the Jean Charles de Menezes case, the stress that has been brought upon the Officers is very sad. In such situations,Officers will have looming over them whether they are trigger happy.
My view is the scumbag should loose his Rights, and be wiped off the earth.
Being a Cop is a Really Bad Job ! We expect them to keep us Safe from these thugs and hoodlums and even Terrorists... all the while being mild as Merry Poppins. We blame them for not being effective... but, then when they Catch some thug we get up in arms because the poor yob came up with bruises ! Frankly, I could Never do the job ! Think what it is you want these fine young men to do.... and then make sure they have the Support and Equipment to do what we want.
