The thugs, who were armed with a knife, had jumped over the cashier's desk when they burst into the William Hill shop in Manchester Road, Altrincham. But they found the shop door had locked automatically when they tried to flee.
They smashed the glass in the door to get outside. The raid took place at 8.15pm on February 9.
Det Con Robert Tothill, of Trafford CID, said: "I would like to hear from anyone who saw these robbers either enter or leave the bookmakers - obviously their exit was a bit of a spectacle as they had to force the glass out of the door and climb out the gap.
"Although nobody was injured, it was a terrifying experience for the staff and those responsible must be caught." T
he three robbers were white and of medium build. They were dressed in black and wearing balaclavas. One was carrying a large knife with a black handle and a silver blade. One of the others was carrying a wheel brace.
