ROBBERS pointed a gun at police officers during a raid at a supermarket.
The thugs had earlier aimed the gun at a shop assistant's head as they ordered him to hand over cash.
One of the gang then pointed the weapon at police officers who arrived as the robbers fled. His accomplice was armed with a hammer. T
he raid took place at Netto in Market Street, Leigh, at 6.10am this morning.
The robbers forced the shop assistant to fill a holdall with money, but had to leave it behind when they heard police arriving.
One of the officers gave chase and saw the robbers leave the area in a silver Vauxhall Astra. The car drove off in the direction of Leigh Road.
The shop assistant and the officers were not injured, but were left shaken by their ordeal.
Det Insp Clare Devlin of Wigan CID said: "These men clearly think nothing of pointing a dangerous firearm at members of the public and police officers in order to get what they want."
Witnesses should call police on 0161 856 5307 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
