Gold leaf and Champagne jelly

CHEFS at a Manchester restaurant have created the world's most expensive pancake for Shrove Tuesday - costing £144.

That's £7.20 for every credit crunch-busting bite. But it does contain edible gold leaf and comes with jelly made from the finest champagne.

It was designed by the kitchen staff at Opus in the Printworks and beats the old record by £49. Head chef Simon Lynch said: "The pancake is such a basic recipe. We wanted to jazz it up a little and demonstrate that even the simplest food can be customised into something unique and delicious."

Pancakes are associated with Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of the 40-day Christian fasting season of Lent, because they were a way to use up rich food such as eggs, milk and sugar.

The posh pancake has Madagascan vanilla pods costing £3 each and 23-carat edible gold leaf at £8 a sheet.

It is served with organic strawberries plus jelly made from Dom Perignon champagne at £115 a bottle.

Do tell us plebs how much 23 ct = 96.5 % gold non edible gold leaf sheet costs again. Make a nice afters for mini turkey kievs. Personally I always prefer fine gold 99.999 % for mine but tastes differ, just see it now down at the sewage works people panning for gold.

144 quid? Aimed at the stupid me thinks.

I like mine with chocolate spread in and I can make stacks for a 'fiver', mmmmmmmmmmm!

I'm amazed that Opus came up with this. I was in on saturday, ordered a white wine and soda and got a white wine and lemonade. I would have thought fancy pancakes were a bit advanced.

And we have people living on the streets and were all talking about eating gold paper? and a pancake £144 something is wrong here.Society is going down the tubes.If these people have this money to waste why dont they put something in a local charity then have a normal pancake,Take it from me they will feel better afterwards and the taste of helping somebody in need tastes better than this pancake.

Wow this sound absolutely delicious :o) im going there this saturday so im gonna ask the chef to whip me up one of these bad boys,you guys flipping rock!!!Pardon the pun.I admit that it is a little on the pricey side but you only live once eh?, dont think i could go on living knowing i never tried the worlds most expensive pancake.peace out.p.s Karma Sutra rules innit (Thursday nights at Opus).

Even here in the land of plenty there would be uproar, they should tar and feather the owner, the people of Manchester are being taken to the cleaner`s, Sunday morning breakfast for me was the full monty plus all the pancakes you could eat for $7, International House of Pancakes, do I miss Manchester?

This is yet just another rip off ,so rather than get ripped off get a normal pancake and give the remainder to a local charity..HP beans by the way because the juice is thicker.

Auz and Ted must be waiters at Opus, they are defending the over priced cafe, you do not need to worry,the in people will arrive Friday and Saturday night to be seen in the cafe that sell`s the $200 pancake.

Take one bottle of Cava

Vanilla essence ( you can use flavoring if very poor )

Take one wedding ring and rub it around the plate. A strawberry and a blob of cornish.

It's disgraceful. And the supermarkets have been showing their usual greed. I've noticed they've been stocking up on flour, eggs and lemon juice for at least the last 12 months! And you know when it's getting near Christmas, as their shelves are full of Easter eggs!

Come on you lot, it's not as if they're forcing anyone to buy the damn things is it? It's a publicity stunt that's gone very well I should think by the amount of interest it's stirred up. It doesn't say anywhere that a paying customer has actually ordered one !!!
