INTREPID Melanie Clegg will represent England in a 300-mile dog sled race through Norway's Arctic tundra.
In March, the former RAF flight lieutenant from Oldham will compete in the Finnmark Race - her first sledding race since moving to Norway six years ago.
Melanie, 35, blames `English madness' for getting hooked on the sport - and she ended up moving to Norway as opportunities are lacking in Oldham.
Back in England to visit her parents and raise sponsorship, Melanie feels it is best to adopt a `tortoise and the hare' approach to the world's northernmost race.
Amazing
She said: "It's the first time in competition for both me and the dogs, so I will be happy to just complete the course."
Melanie has previously taken part as an official, so she knows what to expect.
She said: "It is an amazing sight on the starting day and the noise of 150 dogs is incredible."
Before tackling the race, Melanie and her eight dogs must complete more than 1,500 miles of training to ensure they are ready for the challenge.
She said: "You can face extreme conditions - in 2006, competitors had to race in temperatures of minus-40."
Extreme weather ensures the racer's psychological state is the greatest potential obstacle.
"You just have to ignore the weather," said Melanie.
Blizzards
"Blizzards are common and if things get extreme, the best thing is put your head down in the sled and keep your dogs around you."
Despite having initial reservations, Melanie is looking forward to the race.
She said: "When I first put my name down for it, I spent the next few hours feeling physically sick, but my friends have given me a lot of encouragement."
Melanie is hoping to raise £4,000 to fund hr attempt and said: "I've got a sled and my dogs, but I need money or donations of extreme expedition equipment and clothing.
"Things either wear out or get eaten by the dogs, so I'm always having to buy bits and pieces."
