A MAN died and his wife is fighting for her life after they were struck by a car as they walked home from New Year celebrations.
Stephen Campbell, 49 from Urmston, died when he was struck by a Volvo estate on Stretford Road close to the junction with Gilpin Road, in Urmston. His wife Rosemary, 53, remains in a critical condition in Hope Hospital.
A 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
It is understood the couple had just escorted an elderly member of their family home and were making their way home when they were struck at around 1.20am.
One resident, who declined to be named, said: "His wife was still conscious and she was calling out for her husband. It was terrible. From what I can gather they'd been to a party and had just taken someone home and then they were making their own way home.
"The driver of the car had his head in his hands and he was saying 'What have I done?'. He was taken into a police car."
Mr Campbell, 49, and his wife Rosemary, had two children, daughter Hayley and son Ryan.
Hayley, said: “My dad was married to my mum for 25 years, and lived in Urmston among close family and friends.
“Noted for his generosity, kind spirit and amazing company, dad was never short of friends and was loved and respected by all who knew him.

“She is highly thought of by all as one of the most caring and considerate people you could ever wish to meet and both her and dad were a deeply loved couple and complimented each other perfectly.
“Dad will be deeply missed by all.”
One female neighbour said: “I’ve known Stephen for a long time and he was always friendly and a very nice person.
“They were a nice couple, perfect neighbours and the type of people anyone would want living near them.
