Trams disrupted after derailment

CITY centre Metrolink services were hit after a tram derailed. The tram, linking Manchester Victoria with the Manchester Central conference venue, derailed near Mosley Street.

Services between the two destinations were stopped but all other lines remained open, a Metrolink spokesman said. No one was injured.

The spokesman described the incident at 1.50pm on Boxing Day as a 'minor derailment' and said an investigation was underway to determine the cause.

He added: "A small area around Market Street was affected after the front of a carriage went off the rails".

Isn't this the fourth or fifth derailment? There have been at least two at Mosely Street!

Well they can't keep trams on tracks and more importantly-how safe are we- the same day the tram was derailed a ticket machine was stolen from the platform at Bowker Vale!!! So was the CCTV there not working or were the control room staff not watching the cameras as a machine would take a while to remove. Either way with no police how safe are we as the new Travel Safe Officers only check tickets they do not patrol stations as the GMPTE promised.

ANOTHER ticket machine stolen from Bowker Vale? Two others vanished (both platforms) less than 12 months ago - what a joke. I have no doubt at all the CCTV wasn't working, after all the vast majority of thw simple LCD displays supposedly giving passenger information haven't worked at most stations for donkeys years.

I'm certainly glad I booked a long Christmas break this year and missed the further farce on New Year's Eve. Apparently it would have taken me well over 2 hours to get home from work - and we're only talking Timperley to Heaton Park.

Still it's back to the grindstone on Monday and I can look forward to paying at least £1,067.30 for the privilege of using Metrolink again in 2009. Endless failed vehicles, signals stuck on red, points failures, derailments, other miscellaneous "incidents", and ludicrous overcrowding.

Absolutely fabulous.
