STOCKPORT council has been named best in the country for recycling.
It currently recycles 35.37 per cent of all its waste according to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The next highest council on the list is Rotherham is in second place with a rate of which has a recycling rate of 35.04 per cent. of its waste.
Coun Stuart Bodsworth, executive member for the environment, said: “Thanks to all residents who are recycling as much of their waste as possible.
“It is their efforts which have helped us achieve this. It is excellent to see Stockport is doing so well on a national level as well as being the top performing local authority for recycling in Greater Manchester.”
Next year the council aims to boost the amount it recycles with the introduction of bins for glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, food tins and drink cans.

It is a pity that Manchester is near the bottom of the list. We are all about to see council tax go up to pay the landfill fine that we incur due to our council's pathetic attempts to encourage recycling in the city.

Ah, but is that 35.37% of its waste "sent" for recycling or..
35.37% actually recycled into other useable items...
A subtle difference - the "sent for recycling" spin means the recycling company don't want it all and bounce it back for landfill!
