POPE Benedict XVI has claimed that saving the world from homosexual behaviour is as important as protecting the rainforests.
The leader of the Roman Catholic Church believes humanity needs to listen to the 'language of creation' to understand the intended roles of man and woman.
He told senior Vatican staff homosexual and transgender relations are a 'destruction of God's work'. Gay and lesbian Christians have denounced the comments as totally 'irresponsible and unacceptable'. The Church opposes gay marriage and teaches that while homosexuality is not sinful, homosexual acts are.
'Destruction'
Pope Benedict, 81, said: "If tropical forests deserve our protection, humankind... deserves it no less." He called for 'an ecology of the human being' and said when the Church defends God's creation, 'it does not only defend the earth, water and the air.. but also protects man from his own destruction'. His words, later released to the media, emphasised a total rejection of gender theory. It explores sexual orientation, the roles assigned by society to individuals according to their gender, and how people perceive their biological identity. But the Pontiff warned gender theory blurs the distinction between male and female could lead to the 'self-destruction' of the human race.
'Bashing'
But Rev Sharon Ferguson, chief executive of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement, said: "It is more the case that we need to be saved from his comments. It is comments like that that justify homophobic bullying that goes on in schools and it is comments like that that justify gay bashing. There are still so many instances of people being killed around the world, including in western society, purely and simply because of their sexual orientation or their gender identity.
"When you have religious leaders like that making that sort of statement then followers feel they are justified in behaving in an aggressive and violent way because they feel that they are doing God's work in ridding the world of these people."

He risks alienating his own priests...who are a very large minority gay community themselves.
No wonder you don't see any young people at churches anymore (apart from those forced to attend by their parents of course!) They need saving from themselves, I believe in Superman more than their god.

He should remember that his religious book tells that Jesus lived with a dozen men. What are we to make of that?
But the media don't help, broadcasting his minority catholocism (or at least a minority in the UK) around the world. Perhaps if he considered the words Love one another as you would yourself.
But it never ceases to amaze me about how obsessed all religions are with sex. There are far more important things going on the world that need the attention of people than bigotry against one group or another.
I'm an atheist but I consider that I have more christian spirit than many so called christians.
Happy Holiday.

Despite all scientific evidence about genes etc, you can count on religion to buck the trend and to reinforce their credentials that are equal to the Flat Earth Society.
However, for those who believe in such matters there then remains the problem that if a God presumably created both the Pope and homosexuals - should not this particular God be held accountable? Happy Christmas.

Brilliant! I'll try to answer you Thaitanium.
When a mummy and daddy love eachother very much they sometimes decide to write a letter to the stork who brings them a baby and puts it in the cabbage patch. When the baby grows up it has something called 'free will' which means that the baby can become a priest, a nun or even a gay person. Shall I tuck you in now?

Merry Christmas to all (in the sense of the original pagan festival at this time of year which was taken over by the church because it was popular)...

The Catholic Church exists to fill people with guilt over anything remotely pleasurable. Ignore it
Oh, and by the way, happy Christmas and New Year to my fellow posters.

"I think you'll find a far greater proportion of gay clergy in the Church of England."
Wherer on earth have you plucked that idea from? Where are the facts?
"Despite the political correctness that now appears to rule our country, many people might actually agree with him. In a democracy he is entitled to his opinion whether or not we agree with him."
We may live in a democracy (i.e. the UK) but what has the Pope to do with us? Answer - nothing.
"Now if you were a true Christian you might try praying that he changes the perceived error of his ways."
What do non-christians who disagree with him do?
"Merry Chrismas to you all regardless of your beliefs or sexual predelictions."
To wish non-christians a merry christmas is patronising.

My apologies, I had forgotten about this little hobgoblin. The thing is, as a heterosexual male, not by choice but because I was born like that, there's no way that I could fancy, let alone kiss, somebody say like Desperate Dan or John Prescott (well okay, maybe a little peck on the cheek because it's Christmas). However, there will be males who do fancy such people - it's not their fault.
I would have thought a homophobic Pope is the last thing a Catholic church needs these days, but hey, Tony Blair is going join the throng so it must be right.

Merry Christmas all. Bean, I bought you a gold-plated birch for christmas. You may have to share it with Ace though...
Princess_Pam, Crumpsall (23/12/2008 at 12:09)
And isn't Yule the festival of pagans celebrated on 25th December? Didn't the Christians used to celebrate Christmas on March 28th?
