AN HIV asylum seeker's fight against deportation to Rwanda has been backed by Manchester council.
The 43-year-old woman, who has asked to be identified only by the name Mahoro, has been refused leave to remain in Britain.
Now council leader Sir Richard Leese has written to immigration minister Phil Woolas in her support, describing herĀ as a model citizen.
Councillors passed a resolution tabled by Marc Ramsbottom, leader of the town hall's Liberal Democrats, to support her campaign to stay.
Mahoro, who lives in south Manchester, is originally from Rwanda and contracted HIV after being raped by a soldier in an attack linked to the country's ethnic conflict.
She found she was HIV positive two months before moving to Manchester. She fears that if she goes back to Rwanda she will not be able to get the treatment she needs and will be targeted by her husband's murderers.
She said: "When I moved to south Manchester and started going to church I made friends and began getting a lot of support."
Mahoro is an active volunteer in community organisations including the George House Trust, which supports people with HIV.
Sir Richard's letter described how the council 'passed a unanimous resolution recognising that it would be inhuman to deport' Mahoro and urges Mr Woolas, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, to exercise his discretion.
Earlier this year, Withington MP John Leech made Mahoro's case in Prime Minister's Question Time, and last month she addressed parliament herself.
Coun Ramsbottom said: "Mahoro is a model citizen in lots of ways."

I suppose this is another post that won't be published because of it's truth.

As for the Peoples Republic of Manchester backing this womans case, whats new? From what I have seen of this mob I wouldn't trust them to back a horse even if it was a favorite stick to emptying bins thats what they are there for not stunts like this.

She is not an 'economic migrant', she is from a war torn country in need of humanity and understanding.
She has HIV and she volunteers to work for a charity from what I can gather from the story.
I also understand the vast amount of NHS funds it takes to treat a very unfortunate person with the required drugs to combat HIV. Being as she hasn’t paid taxes and contributed I can understand the response.
However, like I said, she isn’t an economic migrant coming to the UK to be provided with a comfy lifestyle, she is seeking refuge from a war torn nightmare of country and this is the issue.
I agree those from countries where there is no war, no real issues other than you can get more of a comfortable lifestyle by coming to the UK should restricted harshly. But this woman I am not so sure.
She is sick, persecuted and driven from her home. Maybe these are the real needy people we should help?

And hasn't she made her home here now?
So why don't we let her stay, get off benefits, and earn her living. That's what the asylum seekers I meet want!
Perhaps those that are hostile to asylum seekers without knowing them personally have a problem, or have had problems in the past. Of course there may be crooks amongst them, but let's not jump to conclusions based on ignorance. And if people are beefing about OUR taxes being spent on people who need medical help, perhaps they should think how much more the NHS could get if the government didn't keep us "safe" by spending so much on trashing Iraq to please George Bush.
