IN Bury 16,563 voted for the plans, with 64,001 against.
Councillor Bob Bibby, Tory leader of Bury Council, said: “I have been opposed to the principle of congestion charging from the very start.
“However I have always welcomed the significant investment in the public transport system that the TIF bid would bring and this would have resulted in benefits for the residents of Bury.
“I am disappointed that the government has now said there will be no associated investment in public transport.
“The government has been trying to push us into adopting an unfair charge and surely now cannot leave Greater Manchester to the cold winds of the recession.
“I call upon the government to meet its obligation to the city region and ensure that the £1.5bn grant from the Department of Transport is allocated to the Manchester authorities to spend on improving the public transport infrastructure in Greater Manchester at this critical time.
“The government is committed to regional development and starving the second biggest city of investment at a time of recession would have devastating consequences for our economic future.
“I hope that over the coming weeks the AGMA leaders will come together to lobby government to ensure the necessary funds are available to secure vibrant public transport investment which is long overdue.”

What a pity that no one listened to the people in the first place, maybe we could have avoided this huge waste of money and resourses.
Perhaps now those resposible will realise that they have a responsibility to represent the people who elected them instead of heading off on their own ego trip.
Well Done Bury.
If only AGMA had listened to the people during the consultation.
Politicians should take this as a warning to serve rather than to govern
I like your comments Bob, I doubted you mid week for which I now appologise. You have my support and the conservatives now have my vote.
Where is David Chaytor, will he now spend another 8 years talking about a rail link to rossendale and do nothing about it?
Well someone has to say it...
After a result that is almost 4 to 1 against the congestion charge in ALL 10 authorities, exactly what difference would an elected Mayor have made to the situation.
Maybe the public are not as dumb as some like to make out and with the noises now being made by Bob and his Bunch - which admittedly they have been making all along - some politicians and councilors are not as deaf as some like to make out either
Considering David Chaytor supported this ridiculous scheme just goes to show how out of touch he is with his constituents. He has absolutley no idea what we want in Bury North. This also sends a clear message to Labour and anyone else who thinks they can take us for a ride. We will not accept it anymore. Goodbye Mr Chaytor. at the next election you will go from backbench to no bench. And not before time too.
