COMMUTER rail services were badly disrupted this morning after a man threatened to jump from a bridge.

Five train services were cancelled and several others diverted or delayed as police closed part of the West Coast Main Line after reports that a man was sitting on the edge of a rail bridge in Stockport.

Officers arrived at the Adswood Road junction just after 9am and spent more than two hours negotiating with the man before finally taking him into custody.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "We were called after reports of a man on the bridge threatening to jump. We isolated the area which involved stopping a number of trains."

Rain services later returned to normal.
