A PINK ice rink plan by Salford council has been blocked . . . for 48 hours. Members upset about £185,000 being spent on the Christmas attraction voted 4 to 3 against it.
But council leader John Merry hit at the `Scrooge councillors' and vowed to push it through a full council meeting tomorrow.
The rink idea was `called in' by Tory and Liberal Democrat opposition councillors and a scrutiny committee voted against it. But it is expected that ruling Labour councillors will now be ordered to vote in favour.
The Labour group has 36 out of 60 councillors and unless there is a rebellion, the rink on lawns outside the town hall at Swinton will be approved. It will be coloured magenta, to match the city's corporate image.
A report says it will be open for 35 days from December 6, with each session lasting 45 minutes. The average ticket will cost £5.
Last year, 7,000 skaters were attracted and a report says a target of 7,500 has been estimated for this year.
Despite 30 approaches to private firms, no sponsorship has been secured.
Instead, £26,000 will come from Urban Vision - the council's planning department - Salford Primary Care Trust, and City West Housing Trust. If usage is the same as last year, it will earn £37,500.
Liberal Democrat councillor Steve Cooke said it highlighted `how this council operates - they thrust through what they want in the face of any opposition'.
Tory leader Karen Garrido said: "I am not convinced it can make a profit or break even."
But Coun Merry said: "If we don't have it, the message we would be sending out is that Manchester can have Christmas . . . but Salford can't."

This would be the same Labour Council that is struggling with a £15M deficit and is looking to make it's staff redundant for Christmas.
Labour Economic policy in all it's glory.

The council also plans to cut the wages of around 860 staff by up to £4,000."
But we can afford a pink ice rink.........talk about rubbing salt in the wound.

Erm unless I’ve read this article incorrectly Cllr Merry, Salford CAN’T afford the ice rink - unless once again the put upon taxpayer pays for it; with funding for the proposed rink coming from a local housing association and the Primary Care Trust. Manchester on the other hand COULD afford their ice rink as instead of being reliant on huge amounts of public money, they were successful in securing corporate sponsorship from developers such as Argent and Bruntwood.
Can I suggest to Cllr Merry that he takes a step back into the real world just for a minute, and considers how his disregard for public funds looks to ordinary people / employees in Salford? Ordinary people who are struggling to keep their heads above water and worried every single day about losing their jobs and homes?

This is exactly why we have a Labour Council who will overule the decision very soon !

Like many local councils, all jobs have undergone job-evaluation, with the support of the unions to ensure equal pay and equality for all employees ie everyone gets paid the same for the same job !
My job in a different local authority is also being evaluated, so what has happened in Salford is no different to any other local Council !
I believe fully in equal pay and equality but I personally do not support this job-evaluation exercise which has been supported in full by Unison !
This is why I am a member of another Union which has not supported outright the proposals for job-evaluation because it can mean pay cuts for some staff against their wish !
The fact is that the Council is doing something for our young people to enjoy which is similar to many other towns and cities nationwide !
Tory Scrooges and Liberal Scrooges !
