A SHOCK survey has found eighty five per cent of teachers hear homophobic abuse in schools every week.
And over half who took part in the study - based on five Oldham secondary schools - said they had been a target for homophobic abuse themselves.
Officials at the National Union of Teachers, who commissioned the survey, say the results are shocking.
Tony Harrison, from the Oldham branch of the NUT, said: "Not only do 85 per cent of teachers hear homophobic abuse of staff or pupils each week but over half the teachers who responded have been the target of homophobic abuse themselves by pupils during the school year."
Damages
He added: "Homophobia is a destructive force and damages young people who are abused because of their sexuality or perceived sexuality."
The pilot survey is now set to be rolled out to all schools in the north west. Avis Gilmore, the NUT's Regional Secretary for the North West of England said: "This pilot paves the way for a comprehensive study of homophobia across North West schools, which we believe will replicate the evidence we have collated in Oldham.
"Three quarters of teachers in the survey would welcome training both school wide and individually on addressing homophobia and we are working with Oldham to develop a comprehensive package to address their concerns."
Councillor Kay Knox, said Oldham council 'fully supports the initiative'. She added: "We will give our cooperation and support to proposals put forward by the union to help stamp out homophobic bullying in our schools. Of course all forms of bullying are unacceptable, particularly where children are involved. Where needed we will look to improve things."
The survey comes after calls for homophobia in schools to become one of the factors assessed by Ofsted inspectors.
In July Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg told the gay rights group Stonewall two-thirds of gay pupils reported homophobic bullying at school, with almost one-third saying that an adult in the school was to blame.

When I was at school you were called names such as 'gay/poof' for being slightly effeminate, if you ran like a girl or couldn’t throw a cricket ball. It was a bit of name calling (extracting the urine), not bullying and not homophobic.
I was called worse than that being a 'black teenage lad' in school in the 70's! Were they racist? Not in my opinion, it was a bit of ribbing and I was never bullied. My nickname was ‘Midnight’!
Sticks and stones etc. However if violence is involved then it becomes a different matter. But just some name calling, please, get over yourself and grow up.
Fat kids, scruffy kids, kids with snotty noses, thin kids, lanky kids, ginger kids, kids with stupid hair, kids not good at sports etc, etc, etc (basically all kids) get the mick taken and get called names.
You don’t need the leader of the Lib Dems to get involved, and you certainly don’t need Stonewall to be involved. They will just want to ensure that everyone in a school is 'gay aware' rather than being concerned about the standard of education provided.
Like I said, sticks and stones.............
