United stars at Unicef charity dinner

MANCHESTER United stars and their WAGs turned out in style for a gala dinner to raise funds for children across the world.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson and players Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Dimitar Berbatov were also joined by stars from Coronation Street and Hollyoaks for the seventh annual United for UNICEF Gala Dinner.

The theme of black tie event held at the Old Trafford ground was 'Champions of Youth'. Money raised from last night's (Sunday) star-studded occasion goes towards the UNICEF global children and Aids campaign.

In China, an estimated 200 people are infected with HIV each day; the vast majority are children.

Cash from the event will help to fund an innovative UNICEF HIV prevention project, providing young Chinese people with the education and information they need to protect themselves from the infection.

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who is also an UNICEF Ambassador, said: "At Manchester United, we are committed to supporting young people.

"Today, across the world young people face many great challenges, but undoubtedly one of the greatest is AIDS.

"AIDS is having a devastating effect, robbing youngsters of their families, their friends and their future.

"But there is hope. The gala dinner gives us the chance as a club to show our full support for these young people and raise funds for UNICEF's vital work to ensure that the young are protected from HIV.

"The event will make a lasting difference to the lives of children worldwide."

David Bull, UNICEF UK executive director, said: "Manchester United's support for UNICEF and our AIDS campaign is vital for our work. "The funds raised by tonight's United for UNICEF Gala Dinner will provide thousands of children in China with the education and information they need to protect themselves and their loved ones from HIV.

"With this money we will be able to give children the chance of a future.

" The event also featured a grand auction and among the prizes was the chance to watch former Old Trafford star David Beckham and his LA Galaxy team in action in Los Angeles.

I don’t want to be negative or cynical. However, I would love to know exactly how much was raised at this auction and gala dinner for UNICEF. Then we should sum the total wages per annum of all the 'stars' that attended and then work out the ratio of what they earn to what was raised.

I think it would make very interesting reading?????

I always find it a bit weird too that to feed the needy they have to provide ‘Michelin Star’ grub to the guests?

Then we have these champions of charity. Rock stars who lecture us and make us all feel bad so we donate when they own private jets!

I really want to know how much money from these social events actually ends up in the hands of the worlds needy? Not as much as the press coverage is worth to enhance the profile of an attending celeb I bet ;-)

Hey - plenty of style at the Emirates, just no content.
We were brilliant in two halves of the pitch...
