A BOY threw a powerful firework into a chip shop, forcing the owners to flee in terror.
The youth, thought to be as young as 10, burst into Silverdale Chippy, in Openshaw, Manchester, and hurled the explosive on to the floor before running off.
No customers were inside but owner Kwanshing Wong, 52, said explosions lasted for about 15 minutes.
Mr Wong and his wife Kanfong ran into a back room as the shop filled with smoke. The walls and floor were severely scorched.
Fire chiefs said the couple could have been killed.
Mr Wong said: "It was flying all over the shop and we could not see through the smoke. It was very scary for us."
The Tuesday night incident came as Greater Manchester Fire Service launched its annual Bonfire Night fireworks crackdown.
Last year, firefighters dealt with 35 people injured by fireworks and bonfires.
The fire service is operating a firework amnesty so members of the public can safely dispose of illegal or unwanted fireworks. Free collections can be arranged by calling 0800 634 0880.

Have controlled firework displays, rides, toffee apples, treacle toffee, free entry. Just rip us off for the rest.

I know he was only 10, but all the more reason to ban them and just have organised displays.

We start hearing them in our neghbourhood from about september onwards and its gon january before they cease and all along people and property are damaged.
More regulated sales and if your caught using fireworks inappropriately then an appropriate sentance should be provided.
Maybe if this 10 year old is causgh he should be shoved in a room and freightened like the poor chippy owner
Might make him think again about being a silly little Ba****d

(a)if instructions are carefully followed,
and (b)safety distances are adhered to,
then fireworks entertain NOT harm the users and their spectators-SENSIBLE USE CAUSES NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER.

Im not saying everyone who has fireworks are idiots, if you want to let fireworks off in your own garden at bonfire night ive got no problems with that whatsoever.
It’s the scallies letting them off for the next 2 months that annoy me, these kids shouldn’t be able to get the fireworks in the first place and that’s why i believe you should have to apply for a licence for them!
Ace Shakespeare , manchester (24/10/2008 at 16:10)
Are you real "Most of these scroats" Cannot real or write never mind be sensible! Its time to ban this outright sale of explosives to the public. And stop the dangers to everyone.

This Time Last year I was attacked by a bunch of fools that were randemly fireing rockets from a car window on a busy estate. As i found myself pind agaist a wall with no where to run, first i was hit on the arm then again to the side of my head cousing burns to my face loss of hair and a lump to my temple the size of a tennis ball. Its no joke being fired upon and something should be done about the freefor all sale each year. Bonfire night used to be a close community avent???? But now!??

If that is correct .... I would urge anyone who has the misfortune to suffer an injury through Firework misuse to take the Council of the area concerned to Court for allowing traders to supply the general public with explosives !!!!, and no .... I am not a kill joy, just a sensible person who has had enough of idiots and scroats being allowed to wreck the lives of ordinary people !!!!

The Govt, explosives industry group, british fireworks association and importers/distributors and rospa are dead against such a ban because it will merely lead to a healthy blackmarket in dangerous substandard poorquality potentially lethal deadly chinese import fireworks of unknown origin taking over from sales of legal safe BS7114 compliant importer/distributor regulated firework imports, AND there is temptation for idiots to try and make their own fireworks/pyrotechnic devices from household substances or by tampering with legal pyrotechnics to make them ie distress flares/theatrical pyrotechnics with serious fatalities and results while they are made or set off, and as if the police are gonna play catch me charlie going out to odd fireworks going off in the face of a ban;they can't be everywhere at once!!! They're not gonna run round playing chase me charlie and prosecute odd fireworks going off when they have other things on their plate!!! As IF.

"why should the retailsale/private use of fireworks be curtailed to the sensible majority because of the police's inadequacy to deal with them? "
"All the killjoys on here who want the retailsale/privateuse of fireworks to the public think again;"
"dead against such a ban because it will merely lead to a healthy blackmarket in dangerous substandard poorquality potentially lethal deadly chinese import fireworks of unknown origin"
"there is temptation for idiots to try and make their own fireworks/pyrotechnic devices from household substances or by tampering with legal pyrotechnics"

all sound ideas, in my view
now replace fireworks with cannabis in any of those sentences, and tell me the difference?
