A POLICEMAN'S foot was broken when suspected armed robbers he was trying to arrest drove at him in their car.

The injured cop was one of a team of firearms officers from Greater Manchester Police who were conducting an armed 'strike' on the gang as they sat in a Saab just outside Nantwich, in Cheshire.

When the police swooped, the car mounted a pavement and drove at one of the officers, hitting his foot.

Other members of the police team gave chase as the gang ditched the car and fled on foot.

Five men were seized by officers behind Nantwich Town football club  at 10.30am today.

They were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

The alleged driver of the car was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The injured officer was still in hospital this afternoon, being treated for a broken foot.
