The National Archives are inviting UFO hunters to delve into Ministry of Defence files, many of them kept under wraps for years.
There are sightings all over the country including one in 1986 when police, travelling on a moorland road between Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire spotted an `illuminated unidentified object'. They told the MoD in an official police report: "This took the form of a continuous but intermittent yellow/red light of a uniform roundish shape. There was no sound or smell coming from it, it was at about 20 degrees on the horizon hovering, but moving slightly in all directions from its axis."
They claimed that it remained for about 20 minutes and could be clearly seen. The weather was fine and dry and there was good visibility.
Manchester Airport air traffic control was contacted at the time and they reported that no planes were flying in their control area.
Other sightings include a UFO which apparently almost collided with an airliner flying towards Heathrow.
The archive website offers a wealth of details including an American Air force jet being ordered to shoot down a UFO flying over East Anglia.

Dr David Clarke, a UFO expert, says the files contain everything from close encounters between aircraft and unexplained objects to stories from members of the public who believe they were in contact with ETs, extra-terrestrials.
Dr Clarke said: "Making the material available to all those who have an interest in this subject means that everyone, expert or amateur, can make an informed decision on the mystery of UFOs."
The first reports of `flying saucers' were in 1947 in Washington when a private pilot, Kenneth Arnold, reported seeing nine strange objects that moved at tremendous speed across the sky.
His sighting triggered a wave of similar reports.
The UFO has become a synonym for an alien spaceship, but for the military forces of the world it refers to something in the sky the observer can see but does not recognise.
Dr Clarke said: "In the vast majority of cases, investigations have discovered ordinary explanations for UFO reports such as bright stars and planets, meteors, artificial satellites, balloons, aircraft seen from unusual angles and space junk burning up in the atmosphere.
"But there are some cases where no common explanation can be fund."

The vast majority of so called sighting are explained by known phenomena. The small residue can be put down to secret government activity.
Face it, we are alone in the universe: no gods, no aliens, no point.
PS the picture taken over Stretford is clearly a homemade hotair balloon. Dead easy: meths, lint, foil pie dish, a cheap bin bag and bit of cotton and sellotape.

Bean B4, Manchester, on the whole I agree with your comments. However it is highly unlikely that we are alone in the universe. That said it is only slightly more likely that we will ever be visited by our co-inhabitants of this universe. The time and distances involved make it a non starter

I'll give you the point about Gods but you've obviously never been to Coalville in Leicestershire. Pod people everywhere you look!

How naive! I'm not suggesting we are being visited by ET in any way, but to suggest that no other planet in the entire universe could have an atmosphere and be within suitable distance of the nearest large star to enable life is ridiculous.

No noise and too big to be quiet that close up.
then later I saw an object appear then disappear, then appear again, then disappear.
I suspect it was some new government stealth craft, but until it is identified as such, it will remain a UFO.

But as regards possible visits from extra-terrestrial life, people who comment that distances from us make this impossible always make the mistake of judging this by our present knowledge. Remember, people have always done this and originally thought radio waves would kill, travelling at more than a modest speed would be fatal etc.
The research into things like the String Theory, where scientists claim to have confirmed the existence of other dimensions for one thing, opens up all sorts of possibilities and emphasises our current lack of insight into what the Universe is really all about.
Pity though that an interesting subject should always be clouded by stupid hoaxes and reports from attention-seekers.

If one in a million of them have a sun like ours and one in million of them have a planet like Earth and one in a million of them has life on it, then there's about 70,000 planets like ours with life on them that are in range of our telescopes.
Bean B4, manchester (20/10/2008 at 14:41)
I disagree. What do you think the odds are of the right chemicals coming together in the right place at the right time to create life - and life capable of turning their attention to other civilisations elsewhere in the universe? It must be trillions and trillions to one. So how many planets are there in the correct sort of region? No doubt trillions and trillions. So, you see, mathematically, the odds are probably 1:1 - and we were it.
The alternative argument - even more naive, is that God only created this shambles the once.
Sorry, Batfink, your 'how naive' approach belies your own childlike view of the universe. Too much Dan Dare when you were a kid!

"The research into things like the String Theory, where scientists claim to have confirmed the existence of other dimensions for one thing"
These are virtual, mathematical dimensions invented to answer pure maths questions. They are not other dimensions in a whoooooooo kind of way.
I repeat, no gods, no UFOs, no spirits, only us in our aimless, pointless existence.
