Festival de-light for thousands

DEMON KING Ravan, portrayed by Chandra Shekar, with dancers Aniali Navada and Devika Rad

THOUSANDS flocked to Manchester's Platt Fields Park for a day of Hindu celebration.

Music filled the air and hundreds of burning lanterns lit up the sky for Dashehra and Diwali - the festival of light.

A giant demon king and a fireworks finale were highlights of Saturday's event to symbolise the triumph of good over evil and mark the start of Hindu New Year.

More than 300 children made lanterns and monkey costumes for a procession as Bollywood, Bhangra, folk and traditional dancers performed on stage.

The celebration was organised by Manchester council and the Indian Association Manchester.

Coun Mike Amesbury said it was a `fantastic day', adding: "This was an opportunity for Manchester to celebrate its cultural and religious diversity and to share this wonderful event with the city's Hindu community."
