Bankers dig deep for centre

The Bank of New York Mellon staff who have been working with Salford Youth Offending Service
FINANCIERS have invested time and sweat to improve a run-down community project.

Salford Women's Centre, which has helped women in crisis for 20 years, was facing the axe after Salford council decided to cut its £70,000-a-year funding from April this year.

Protesters successfully campaigned to reverse the decision, but it still relies on donations to keep going.

The centre had 8,000 visits last year for its teenage pregnancy support group, child care, counselling and activity workshops.

Now staff from The Bank of New York Mellon have joined forces with Salford Youth Offending Service to improve the centre. Ten workers from the bank's Manchester office in Piccadilly Gardens and 11 local young offenders worked on the gardens.

Many of the young offenders stayed behind voluntarily `after hours' to help finish the project, which was organised by the bank.

Over a week, the volunteers planted trees, mowed lawns and built a sensory `touch and feel' area in the gardens.

Bob Preece, from the bank, said: "Salford Women's Centre is a fantastic organisation which makes a real difference to the lives of local people and we were keen to help out.

"We are committed to supporting the wider community."

Centre manager Allison Taylor said: "The help we've received has been fantastic.

"With funding increasingly an issue for many charities, volunteering work like this can have a major impact and we'd like to thank everyone involved."

This kind of thing goes on all the time, every day of every week in business. My ex-company sent a group of us to clear small trees and weeds from an area of scrubland near Leigh. The companies do it to get people out of the office and to get free publicity about being green and caring. At the end of the weeks work, we were even given a certificate in 'basic woodland management' which isn't much use in the finance industry!

We didn't get our pics in the MEN though, perhaps because we were all blokes and not as pretty as the people in your photo.

Glad to see the Bankers doing something useful other than getting the world into financial meltdown !!!!

It was not just any work organized by the company...it was project initiated by a few employees and performed by them...every bit of it was their choice and their hard work...that is why there is press coverage:)
