A QUICK-THINKING neighbour has been praised after he leapt into action and saved a woman from a blaze at a flat.

Fire crews went to Greystoke Drive in Langley, Middleton, following reports people were trapped inside.

But when they arrived they found the female occupant had been rescued by an upstairs neighbour who acted after hearing a smoke alarm.

He went down to the flat and managed to drag the woman clear.

The fire, which started in a chip pan at about 6.20pm yesterday, was quickly extinguished.

John Wilkinson, a watch commander at Heywood station, said: "The woman was quite drowsy when the neighbour got there. It wasn't a massive fire but the smoke was nasty. He did a good job."
