PETER Mandelson is to make a shock return to the Government it emerged today as Gordon Brown carried out his first Cabinet reshuffle.
Mr Mandelson, who is currently Britain's European Commissioner, has twice resigned as a Cabinet minister under a cloud.
It was reported that he will return to one of his old jobs at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
That would mean taking over from John Hutton who was said to be heading for Defence where he will be replacing Des Browne who is expected to leave the Government.
In other moves, Chief Whip Geoff Hoon was said to be going to Transport, taking over from Ruth Kelly who is standing down to spend more time with her young family.
He is likely to be replaced by Deputy Chief Whip Nick Brown, one of the Prime Minister's closest political allies.
The Leader of the Lords, Baroness Ashton of Upholland, is to replace Mr Mandelson in Brussels.
As a peer, her appointment would avoid the need for a potentially difficult by-election if a sitting MP had been chosen for the post.
Former foreign secretary Margaret Beckett was also said to be making an unexpected return to the Government, although it was not immediately clear in what capacity.
Surprise
However, the big surprise is the return of Mr Mandelson.
It would also mark the end of a feud with Mr Brown dating back more than a decade to when Mr Mandelson supported Tony Blair to become Labour leader following the death of John Smith.
Having given up his parliamentary seat in 2004 in order to take up the post of Trade Commissioner, he would have to be given a peerage and a seat in the House of Lords if he returns to government.
His appointment would be seen as a major olive branch to Blairites in the Government still smarting after Mr Brown's perceived put-down of their favourite - Foreign Secretary David Miliband - as a "novice".
The move was welcomed by Derek Draper, a former adviser to Mr Mandelson who has recently returned to work for the Labour Party.
"I think Peter will prove to be a pretty formidable secretary of state, a really brilliant contributor to the strategy of the Government and the presentation of the Government," he said.
"People will look at Peter and think: 'you know what, we misjudge Peter Mandelson sometimes', and actually the strengths of Peter and the good side of Peter will come through now.
"As someone who knows him and has had my issues with him, I think he deserves this and I think he will prove to people why he deserves that place at the top table of British politics."
The move suggests that Mr Brown's reshuffle will be more widespread than had been originally anticipated, although senior figures like Mr Miliband and Chancellor Alistair Darling are expected to retain their current jobs.

all the sleaze and spin he created over the years and the fact he is disgraced means labour must have run out of steam.
it also show gordon brown how much he has lost touch with the people.

the EU comminsioners are nominated by each countries government, I expect PM Cameron would have some other ex politico in mind for the job once he is elected
Maybe having an EU regulator overseeing regulation here will be of some benefit?

Every time I see his 'visog' I cant help laughing at a Rory Bremner sketch. When Pokamon were all the fashion with kids and these 'Pog' things were being banned from schools, he did a take up of an advert selling the 'New Labour Pokamon Team'!
John Prescott as 'bulbasaur', and Mandy as 'jigglypuff'!
Quality stuff………………….

This Mandelson fellow is heading up the Department for Business. What business has he run?
Time was when the Minister of State in this position woul dhave vast experience of business.
Before becoming an MP he was a councillor and somewhat fleetingly was a trainee television producer.
Can you imagine even going to a small local company that employs 200 people and applying for the job of Managing Director having only ever been a councillor and trainee television producer? They would laugh at your CV and wouldn't even grant you an interview. Not a chance. So what qualifies him for this position.
The rest are made up with solicitors - not even people who were Managing Partners of a large practice!
On top of that he had to resign twice, once for not disclosing information on a mortgage application.
When I had my companies I was being pestered by a council in London for their 'enterprise team' to come in a offer their services. They lasted twenty minutes. One was an ex-business studies teacher, one a coucillor who previously was a baker and the third was an ex-teacher of IT.
At this point I must have been turning over £28m at 31 years old. What could they teach me?

He has only made (that we know of) two major mistakes, one regarding a mortgage and another regarding passports. These are easily forgotten and forgiven.
David Cameron must be very worried about this appointment - yeah right. LOL!

All the best brains unfortunately steer clear of becoming politicians so we are left wit the rubbish.
Mandelson though,is well beyond the pale.

I see Spain is bracing itself to name 130,000 people killed by Franco. That's some civil history of the leadership over there...

1)I live with Spaniards, not in Benidorm. In saying that, there is little wrong with Benidorm as millions of holidaymakers will agree,as it has something for everyone.
2)I lived on the outskirts and worked in Manchester for nerly 60 years,so I have a right to comment.
3)I don't know why,but I still pay tax to the UK and the only benefit I get is a state pension which has been caved to bits by the exchange rate, thanks to the Socialist ideal.
4)Believe it or not,gas and electric are dearer here than in Britain. Not only do we have to use the central heating in winter but we have the cost of fans and air con in summer.Fags and petrol are cheaper.
5)I am lucky,I left the UK just in time,in 2002,when all of the Labour stupidity started but I am saddened as to what has happened at HOME with this gigantic social engineering project.
6)I feel safe here and can walk out at night on my own.OK,we have a few headbangers here but they are third division, not premier league as at HOME.They are very few, despite having a left wing government. They are prats but not a dictatorship like Animal Farm Brown and Co.Pretty harmless really but they do listen to the people.
7)I would really urge anyone to quit the UK as soon as possible because I am convinced that the country is too far gone(due to immigration)to reverse the situation, short of a civil war!

I'm sure it is safe over there in parts, as it is in many parts of the UK. Crime will always be rife in cities, and that certainly includes the Spanish cities. Former IRA members and organised mafia members are on the increase in Spain, not to mention street crime and robbery on the rise under Zapatero.
All I'm saying is, the grass isn't always greener. Which reminds me, isn't the worst drought in 40 years going on in Espanol? I watched a BBC report which said the northern areas, especially near the Pyrenees, are refusing to send water supplies south for the Brits and their golf courses!
