PLANS to add fluoride to the water supply have won initial backing from seven out of 10 Greater Manchester's health trusts.
Manchester, Bury, Trafford, Oldham, Tameside, Stockport and Ashton, Leigh and Wigan primary care trusts have all asked regional health chiefs to produce a fluoridation plan to improve the dental health of thousands of children.
The other three trusts must decide if they want more details about the scheme, which could cost up to £100m, by the end of the month. The plans, with information on how to add fluoride and how much it would cost, should be revealed next spring and the PCTs will then vote for or against.
If they give the go-ahead, the regional health authority, NHS North West, will then decide whether to have a public consultation late next year.
All 24 north west PCTs will vote on the report, which outlines four possible flouridation schemes in parts of the region.
The schemes cost between £35m and £102m to set up.
The area has some of the worst dental health in the country, with thousands of children suffering from tooth decay.
Flouride supporters point out that in Birmingham, where it is added, there are far fewer problems with children's teeth.
The British Dental Association says fluoride in some supplies `could dramatically reduce levels of tooth decay and give children a decent start in life.'
Anti-fluoride campaigners say it is potentially dangerous mass medication and oppose public consultation, claiming people are being misled.
Research for the PCTs found fluoridation can increase the risk of fluorosis - staining on teeth - but found no evidence that it led to a higher chance of bone fractures or cancer.
Five-year-olds in Manchester have an average of 2.3 decayed, missing and filled teeth, compared to 1.47 across the north west and one across England.

Hazel Blears, in response to objections to fluoridation: "those who remain adamantly opposed would be able to use water filters that remove fluoride or buy bottled drinking water"
Is this the joined-up government they've been telling us about?

Fluoride is poisonous!!
There is more than enough evidence against fluoridation of water supplies all over the world, due to the toxic waste debate in every country. When you discover the reason why the Rothschilds, and the Royals, of the world did this deliberately, you'll propbably realise why the world is so DUMB...that's what fluoride does to the brain. Ask yourself how fluoride can protect enamel on teeth by being present in the stomach or the brain?

I've always drank lots of mancunian tap water and avoided sugary drinks and have made it to 23yrs old without a single filling.
If we really want to reduce tooth decay, we need to treat the actual children in question, with education at school about dental hygiene (I was taught about brushing in primary school and given free toothbrushes/ toothpaste) educate the parents, and get more NHS dentists, rather than adding potentially dangerous chemicals to the general water supply!

It's not right that our water should be manipulated and anything other than h20 added just because some people want it in or it's recommended by health care professionals, as some people have already stated if your so bothered go out and buy fluoridated toothpaste but it's not fair for you to poison the rest of us especially with something that could have serious side effects that certain people don't want you knowing about. Why should we let the government almost force us to have something we don't want- we shouldn't.
Water is needed as a vital part of life, and we should Not feel like we have to go out and buy filtered bottled water or water purifiers in order to be safe from potential damage. Wow the government is really taking away our basic liberties. Seriously.
The truth may be hard to learn, but once you research things and find out for yourself you can become aware of these things and be less ignorant and protect your self and stand up for your rights. Don't ever let anyone take those away from you.
