A CORDON has gone up around the Hilton hotel in Manchester city centre after a window cracked.
Police closed roads around the swanky skyscraper hotel, on Deansgate, following reports that a window on the 23rd floor was faulty.
Bosses at the hotel contacted the police to ensure the safety of people passing the hotel and officers say there are no suspicious circumstances.
Road closures are in place on Great Bridgewater Street, Watson Street and Deansgate while the area is made safe.
Hotel general manager, Bernadette Gilligan, said the fault with the window had caused it to crack.
She added: "We contacted the police because the window had cracked and we felt it posed a threat to the street below.
"We think a fault caused the crack."
Police were called to hotel, which occupies the lower floors of the city's skyscraper Beetham Tower, at 1.20pm today and was lifted at 8.30pm.

Well done M.E.N for great News Report.
Dave THE K, Farnworth (11/09/2008 at 17:46)
1st of all "their" not "there", and if you remember when the high winds took a panel off the new court on Bridge St, it nearly killed a women walking past.
If a pane of glass from that height fell off it would tumble as far as Deansgate Locks.
The hotel have done the right thing and so have GMP.
Would it bother you if the police did not close the roads and the glass fell and killed a family that had visited such a landmark??
I think you should think before you write don't you?
Police do things for a reason, to close a few roads is the least we can do.
Plus have you never thought about going around roadblocks or is the Sat Nav in charge??
Drew Peacock, Hulme (11/09/2008 at 18:18)
And why would a family be GORPING up at that building is beyond me.
Why did the Police close the road, worried about Puntures to cars was it, maybe they should have closed the footpaths instead, the window had already fell down Dave, were they expecting another to fall.
Unless they were expecting the open top tourist bus to mount the footpath.
Its all taxpayers money Dave, was india 99 hovering telling the ground support one more piece of Glass dangling !Roger!
I would not mind having a bet your a Police officer, or PCso.
Sorry for the Wrong There/Their.
Mr Perfect Dave.

Here is the headline you would rather of seen in the MEN
Hotel Glass kills two.
Today a double glazed panel fell from the 23rd floor of the Hilton hotel in Manchester city centre, unfortunately a group of workers on their way home were victims of the accident when two people were killed and another is in hospital in a serious condition.
When the manager of the hotel was asked why she never alerted the police she allegedly replied “I never thought.”
I would rather be reading the true story today than the fictitious one above yes everyone was right in their actions and the manager and police should get a pat on the back for being quick of the mark.
Also Dave THE K, Farnworth was only pointing out your basic grammar mistake, personally I don’t think he is Mr. Perfect we all make mistakes some of us more than others.

Very clever, but rather bad form to do nothing other than point out other peoples' errors in their posts.
I think a few posters will be proofing your offerings in future.
My suggestion would be to demolish the building and not allow any future scrapers to be built.
Trumpetman21 (12/09/2008 at 08:48)
Next they'll be closing all roads with trees nearby if it gets a bit windy - just in case of course....
Marc (12/09/2008 at 09:08)
This sentence should contain a comma after the word 'write', or perhaps even a full stop followed by 'Don't you?' for increased dramatic effect.
Bean B4, manchester (12/09/2008 at 09:45)
I agree with the comma idea. The full stop idea would be very bad.'Don't you?' may increase dramatic effect - but would be grammatically, and syntactically incorrect.
Please do not comment on my use of a comma followed by the word 'and' in the last sentence. That is a classic Oxford comma and completely legal.
Anyway - not long now. What date have you got for the big event.

Oh dear - maybe they'll have to borrow some of that netting from Victoria Station roof?
Marc (12/09/2008 at 10:37)
Miss Marc is on the verge of popping as we speak. You'll no doubt hear it across the Greater Manchester area when she goes.

That is kids' street language.
Drew Peacock, Hulme (12/09/2008 at 12:35)
some of you lead sad lives looking for commas, full stops etc, at the end of the day, nobody was hurt, but the roads was closed for hours.

Nearly all the new buildings are just glass frontages - The new court building and the weird looking building near the old MEN site on Deansgate.
I dread to think of the consequences.
Marc (12/09/2008 at 21:15)
Tsk! its 'were', Drew, 'were'. Go to the back of the class.

Sorry Drew, they just leap out at you when you've had these things drummed into you, and been made to observe them in your jobs for over 30 years.
