Campaigners claim a stop at Southmoor Road in Baguley on the existing mid-Cheshire line would take hundreds of commuters off roads and provide a 15-minute link to the city centre.
But Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive strategists claim there would not be sufficient demand to justify costs.
Council bosses have tabled a bid for £3bn of Transport Innovation Fund cash to improve public transport across Greater Manchester.
This includes extending the Metrolink through Wythenshawe to Manchester Airport in return for introducing the congestion charge.
Eugene Ring, 66, chairman of Wythenshawe Railway Action Group, said: "It doesn't make sense. Everyone's talking about reducing congestion and this is a simple and relatively cheap way of doing it." Tweet

We need less public transport links to Wythenshaw, not more. lets keep the residents where they are
nothing like a bit of good old fashioned snobbery hey Peter?
Of course they won't have a rail link to Wythenshawe. Anyone from Wythenshawe travelling, by car, to the city centre for work, rest or play will have to travel through both congestion charging zones - easy money.
This stop is a short walk from Wythenshawe hospital which has already lost its Metrolink service
What do you mean "it doesn't make sense". Of course it doesn't - but them the GMPTE are involved. If they can spend £1/4m on a bus shelter then you know they are useless.
why can't they see a sensible idea when it's under their noses?
Denton has a station that needs to be reopened, but there's no one listening.
and 'Peter King' it would help if you learnt how to spell it states it in the article, pay attention hey....Wythenshawe
Before the railway butcher, Dr Beeching, came on to the scene there were two stations close together; Baguley and Timperley. They were always well used. Although it's a great many years since I visited Wythenshawe, I have fond memories, when a child, of travelling to Southport from Baguley railway station, which had its own Station Master by the way.
What you have now, despite road congestion, is called 'progress'.
So there you have it people of Wythenshawe! you are not worthy of getting a station and will have to rely on your cars to travel around!
so you should all be against the con charge now!
i wouldnt be suprised if in a few weeks they change their minds and let them have a station to win over more yes votes!
I'd imagine it'd be partly due to line capacity - for example on the Airport line there are only 2 trains an hour that stop at Mauldeth road, but a train passes every minute.
Unfortunately because there's only double tracks, and slow diesel trains, we can't get the stopping patterns we deserve.
What’s this article ( and comments ) about ?
How many incorrect ways to spell WythenShawE .
It has an 'S' and 'E' . Southmoor road isn't exactly the centre of the estate, there are 3 station ( Gatley ,Heald Green and the Airport ) that are just as close .
I also want them to reopen Fellowfield Station, would they?
i thought public transport was for our economic future, the more train stations the better then ???
'I also want them to reopen Fellowfield Station, would they?'
assuming you mean Fallowfield Station, then theres no chance. its a pub now.
Shame really.
Timperley station as stated, was actually West Timperley, and I never remember crowded trains calling at it. Mr Beeching was not directly resposible for closing the lines down. He was instructed by a Conservative government to look at uneconomical lines and advise.
Surely, a temporary station could be introduced, and see how it goes.
what a joke always trying to link the metrolink into the argument. the station could be open at very little expense and to the benifit of local industry and the hospital. it would also bring much needed regeneration
This campaign is growing strongly.
We now have Paul Goggins M.P.on board and the full support of the West Wythenshawe Councillors.
This railway halt makes perfect sense and IS EXISTING POLICY to be implemented.
Come on GMPTE/GMPTA, let us have what is already promised to us in Wythenshawe for a change.
Martin Barnes,
Baguley resident.
