Hundreds of brass bells are being clipped to purses and bags to deter pickpockets.
The scheme is part of a major crime crackdown across Salford.
Police hope the sound of jingling bells will alert shoppers - and those around them - to theft.
The bells were handed out to shoppers at Salford Shopping City in Pendleton after figures revealed there have been 23 purse thefts in three months.
Police community support officer John Woods said: "These devices should help to make shopping safer for everyone, especially elderly and disabled people who are more vulnerable to pickpockets."
The scheme was first tried in Bury in 2006 when more than 2,000 bells were given to shoppers.
In Salford, police patrols will be stepped up at the shopping complex and open market.
Video screens displaying crime awareness information will also be set up.
PCSO Woods said: "To deter offenders we are increasing patrols in hot-spot areas, and are also working with businesses and security staff to identify those responsible.
"Plain-clothes officers and CCTV will also be used to target pickpockets, and video units at Salford Shopping City will display warnings to increase awareness of the problem."
A mobile police station will also be set up at Salford's open market on Market Way.
Shoppers will be able to access a range of security advice from specialist crime reduction advisers.
Security advice for cyclists will also be available.

Before you turn a perfectly straightforward story into a reactionary 'political correctness gone mad' rant, just think it through a bit, eh?
