BLACK cab fares will be hiked up as taxi drivers cover the sky-high price of fuel.
Manchester council has allowed a special surcharge on every journey - on top of an above-inflation fare increase that came into force in April.
The move comes as prices at the pumps finally began to fall. It led to claims that hard-pressed customers - already paying high rates to fuel their own cars - could soon find taxis too expensive.
The flat-rate premium, which will add 20p to the cost of even the shortest trip, was requested by the Manchester branch of the Taxi Owners and Drivers Association.
They had originally asked for 40p per journey - and drivers' union Unite called for 60p.
Branch secretary George Simms claimed 'unprecedented' fuel costs were causing 'considerable hardship'.
But the AA said unleaded fuel prices had dropped this month from a record £1.20 per litre in August to £1.12 - still much higher than January's price of £1.04.
Manchester Cab Committee chairman Pat Connor said: "We wanted 40p but we realised that fuel is coming down.
"Drivers have been losing around £40 per week. It has been very hard to be a taxi driver during the fuel crisis."
The rise was approved in principle by the council's licensing committee, but it cannot come into force until after a 15-day notice period in October.
Committee chair Tony Burns said the surcharge would be 'constantly kept under review'.
He said: "It will be temporary as all the indications are fuel prices are falling. The council thought 20p was not unreasonable in the circumstances."
Manchester is the only borough to approve a surcharge - although Trafford and Tameside may follow suit.
David Fish, from Radio Cars Manchester, said: "If rates go to high, people will think twice about taking a cab and will go for the bus or the car instead."

I live next to a black cab rank. The abuse, the noise and the downright arrogance of them beggars belief. And they sit on the backside and get an increase to pay for fuel whilst the rest of us have to slave and absorb cost increases.
Time to open the market to real competition and stop price fixing.

I do object, however, to cabbies that insist on conversing on the phone all of the time in 15 minute jourey; listening to various ethnic music, and even watching (with one eye?) a video while they take me home.
Admittedly, I am sometimes 'hammered', but I do expect some standards. (I'm not rude, always tip and wouldn't mind some dialogue.)
I still maintain, come the 'cashless society', many of those who seem to think driving a 'hack' is easy money, might not want to be here.

if its such a bad job, get a different one!
We all have to pay extra for rising fuel costs etc. supermarkets put up prices, oil companies put up prices, gas, electricity companies put up prices, now you the cabbies put up prices.
Are my wages being put up 5-10-20-30%?? course not, so stop whinging.

You guessed wrong. I have to work hard to get my business. I can't put my prices up as there is a recession on you know. But one thing I do know. I cannot afford to be rude to my customers nor do I think I am above the law.
Enjoy your job - as you put it - its not hard.

The cab drivers always asks for a tip and if they do not get one, throw a childish look at you. I don't tip any more because I don't tip the bus driver who takes me home and since live only 50 yards from the stop, I think I can live with the bus and now we have got a night service...
I agree some of the cabs need some repair, some of them could do with a clean, but if they stopped smoking in their cabs, picking their noses and then trying to con their customers for adding 20p for each bag of shopping.
