A HAVE-A-GO hero has told how he was brutally attacked for challenging teenage yobs who threw chips on the pavement outside his home.
Father-of-three David Thomas, 41, was battered about the head with a weighted sock after he went to intervene.
He was left with a nasty cut to his head - but told the M.E.N. he didn't regret his actions and would do exactly the same again.
"This sort of thing happens too often," said David, who lives with wife Amanda and their two younger children - Molly, eight, and Emily, three.
"The more people let these kids get away with it, the more they will do it. These kids need to have respect. There is a lack of it in this country these days. Communities need to stand up for themselves. The more people that do then the more these children will realise that they cannot get away with their actions."
The case bears a resemblance to the circumstances which led to the death of father-of-three Garry Newlove, 47, in Warrington in August last year. His head was kicked `like a football' by three youths he confronted believing that they had vandalised his wife's car.
David, an engineer, told how he first saw a teenager hanging around outside his house near Lewis Road in Droylsden.
He said: "I was sat on the computer and saw him out of the corner of my eye.
"He was flicking his chips with his fork on to the pavement outside the gate.
"I was telling him to shift through the window. I then went to the front door and told him to go away."
The boy was then joined by a second teenager.
David, who also has an adult son, said: "They were making threats and said they would be back. Then they disappeared."
Moments later, a gang of five returned to his house - shouting to David: `Come outside'.
David said: "I went outside and the next thing I knew one of them went behind my back and hit me on the head with something. I thought it was a bottle at first."
David chased the gang but they disappeared. He was taken to Tameside Hospital after the attack, but released later that night.
David added: "These children could be carrying anything these days but if you stopped and thought about it they would ride roughshod over everyone. They thought that they could do want they wanted whenever they wanted."
Insp Kevin Rankin, who is leading the inquiry, called the incident an `unprovoked attack'.
He said: "Their actions will not be tolerated. I am sure there are people who could assist us in our inquiries and I would appeal to them to get in touch."
Witnesses can call police on 0161 856 9322 or 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

this is how I see it (26/08/2008 at 18:13)
At the end of the day the culprits were not commiting an act of vandalism so should have been ignored.
Many people would say that if there were no individuals prepared to take a stand the villians and scumbags would get away with anything. Well let them. Society in the UK is on a downward spiral and turning a blind eye is much better than a blow to the back of the head and ending up dead or in a coma!

Its hard to trust anyone and i instantly take a dislike to teenagers and groups of lads, i'd probably hit them before saying hello! Manchester and the UK is in a rapid decline and i cant see any improvement soon!

Not long ago there was a guy killed in London for remonstrating with a man who was throwing chips at his girlfriend on the bus.
Sadly i think there will be another Garry Newlove, and probably this year.

Unfortunately we see the same kind of behaviour in every age group, not just teenagers.
I've met enough groups of this age who at first I was concerned about approaching, but who, upon actually talking to them, turned out to be big pussycats with good attitudes toward life & other people in their community, people of any age, will generally respond in the way you approach them, being tolerant & understanding can have a more positive impact than just shouting the odds.

Whe asked what he meant he would say "If you think someone is going to have a fight with you - knock them out and hey presto - no fight"
What these kids are actually going to end up doing is getting serisously hurt when they attack the wrong person and that person uses what they deem as resonable force to defend themselves.
The Gary Newlove incident has given a good example for any defence lawyer to point at after an adult has given a damn good hiding to one of these yobs. It will be interesting to see how it is dealt with and reported when it happens, I do believe it is not far away and I also doubt any jury in the country would convict someone of good character under these circumstances

and it's exactly your look the other way attitude that is causing it

If this was to happen in Wilmslow I would have first asked the youths to sit down and chat and find out why they threw chips on the floor. Maybe they have never had a holiday in theyre lives and are stressed. The goverment and police needs to look at this as an answer and not punishment to youths.

Gangs of teenagers roaming the streets like packs of animals, sitting on peoples walls, booting footballs, screeching and goading each other on to do something bad for a bit of fun.
Where do their parents think they are when they go out?
Maybe they should start asking a few questions, but a lot of them don't care as long as they are out of their hair!

Question 3: Coincidence?

Until the law changes, and some sort of discipline is once more restored, (I do not mean a beating)A good smack, never did me any harm and I learnt from my mistakes.
Children must not be allowed to rule the streets (and that is what is happening today)
Todays society consists of so many children raising children, thousands and thousands of one parent teenage girls, (with no parental skills) bringing up children, who grow up with no knowledge of what the word 'RESPECT' means !
Does any one ever listen to the grave concerns of most law abiding citizens?
WE are slowly becoming a lawless society.
something MUST be done...now

Don't the yobs just love it?
