Sarah Hardacre, Rachael Elwell and Louise Woodcock have knitted the covers - more usually seen on teapots - as part of an art festival.
But they also hope the cosies will help the trees thrive in the miserable weather.
"They are large panels of knitting that are almost like a big blanket wrapped around the tree trunks," said Sarah.
"I think people will really like it. We've made them in the brightest colours that we can get hold of. We are hoping they are going to be tactile, so people will want to touch them, not just look at them."
The cosies are being installed on the New Islington Estate in Ancoats which is undergoing massive redevelopment. The project is part of the New Islington Festival, which will take place on September 6.
The trio - known as Art Yarn - also hope to conduct `urban yarn bombing' in Manchester and Salford - covering lamp-posts and benches with knitted fabrics.

Euurgh, i dread to think what you've been up to.
The cosies look very colourful. They almost make me want to go against a very basic principle of mine and hug a tree :)
