A MUM and daughter ended up in hospital with broken bones when a police van on a 999 call crashed into their car.

The van was on its way to reports of a fight when it was involved in a crash with two other cars on the A58 New Road, Littleborough, near Rochdale.

First it collided with a Vauxhall Astra and then it crashed into a Vauxhall Corsa.

The mother and daughter were in the Corsa.

They were taken to hospital with broken bones following the incident.

A 59-year-old mum, who was a passenger, suffered a broken collarbone and her 19-year-old daughter, who was driving, suffered a broken right arm.

The male driver of the police van and the driver of the Astra suffered minor injuries.

An investigation into the crash has been launched and the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said the matter had been referred to the IPCC 'as a matter of course'.

The force internal affairs branch has also been informed of the incident.

However, GMP insisted the van driver was properly trained and responding properly to the 999 call. "It was an unfortunate accident," said a GMP spokesman.

The van was responding to reports of an assault on Sutcliffe Street in Littleborough. The assault victim, 25, was taken to hospital with a cut to his head.

His condition was not thought to be life-threatening.

Earlier this month, the M.E.N. reported how eight police officers were suspended from driving duties after a grandad biker died following a 50-minute pursuit involving several squad cars and the force plane.

Following the death of Alan Long, 54, who had failed to respond to police requests to stop, it emerged officers only wanted to check his driving documents.

Mr Long, from Denton, was the 25th person killed in six years on Greater Manchester roads in incidents involving GMP vehicles.
