Cat rescued from 30ft pole

The cat was stuck for five hours.
CURIOSITY got the better of a cat that found itself stuck at the top of a 30ft telegraph pole.

The ginger moggy was stranded atop the pole in Little Lever, Bolton, for five hours.

But it was eventually rescued after it was spotted by nearby residents in Ennerdale Close who telephoned the RSPCA.

A fire-fighter had to climb a ladder to rescue the cat after crews were called by one of the welfare charity's inspectors.

But the terrified moggy was less than grateful after being saved following its marathon balancing trick.

It ran off as soon as its paws touched the ground following the rescue.

Steve Torkington, crew commander at Farnworth fire station, said: "Firefighter Scott McPhee volunteered to climb the ladder and rescue the cat.

"He grabbed it by the neck and carried it down, but before he got to the bottom the cat jumped down and ran away.

"It seemed quite frightened."

It is thought the cat, which was not wearing a collar and had no identification chip, had scaled the pole after it was chased by a dog early on Friday evening.

RSPCA Inspector Dave Anforth said: "When I arrived, it was sitting perched on top of the pole doing a balancing act.

"But it seemed quite happy. It was just looking around and surveying its kingdom.

"There was no way we could get it down, so we called the fire service. The cat was uninjured. We assume it headed straight home."

What a complete waste of resources. Cats are vermin and should be treated as such.

So the RSPCA did something. Only a few months a go my old dear Moggie got stuck up a tree. There response was give it 48 hours if it aint come down by then get a tree surgeon!

Cats are not vermin. I think you're quite a scary person.

I know firemen don't do a great deal other than play cards, so I accept they may aswell attend to something like this, however the cat's owners should have to pay for the diesel used by the fire engine.

No careless whisper, cats kill vermin. Get your facts right. Oh and in the eyes of the law I believe they are still classed as property.

What a complete waste of public funds. When has anybody seen a cat die up a tree or pole or whatever. If the cat can get up there it can get down.

A strong jet from a hose pipe would have got the cat down a lot cheaper

As A retired firefighter, can I add that it is good practical practice to pitch ladders in different locations, as it gives crews better training than against a fire station drill tower.

Come on Careless Whisper cats are not vermin they are cute and cuddly, you know they have to be otherwise all the poeple on here who try to make out that they actually care about animals wouldn't have been bothered if it had of been an animal that look horrible. Utter ridiculous just cause its a cat and not a mouse of rat. It a cat that is quite capable of getting down without wasting time and money on it.

NO! LittleBlankMinx.I do not abuse animals. Cats are vermin like rats they carry diseases, fleas and rummage through trash etc. The dirty vermin dig holes in gardens leave feaces then cover it up. Cats are like rats dirty disgusting creatures. Councils should do more andrid the streets of strays and I reiterate I DO NOT ABUSE ANIMALS. Muppets.

didn't anyone have a 'Catapault' handy!!

seriously though, the cat would of come down all by its self if left alone. my cat sits on top of the telegraph pole outside my home all the time, and when she wants to come down she simply walks down head first with her claws giving her all the grip she needs..

its stupid people who cause all the fuss not the animal.

This comment really illustrates what a muppet you are, careless whisper (wish it was quieter than a whisper so we couldn't hear you!).

Henry Piggot you seem to forget it would take at least nine arrows per moggy.
It would be like the battle of Agincourt out there;)
