THE sights and sounds of China came to Salford Quays with the return of the annual dragon boat race.

Hundreds turned out to watch the 40ft-long decorated vessels - adorned with a dragon's head at the front - race across the water to the accompaniment of drums.

The free event, organised by the Manchester Oriental Alliance, saw 36 teams compete throughout the afternoon.

Among the attractions on dry land were lion dancing, an international food court and craft displays and demonstrations.
