A DRIVER who knocked down and killed a teenager during a 70mph car race has been jailed for six years.
Ghulam Hussain, 28, of Deeplish Road, Rochdale, was racing another car and driving in a bus lane, a court heard.
He was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving after a trial at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court. Hussain, who denied the charge, has also been disqualified from driving for five years.
His car, a Nissan Primera, ploughed into Craig Borland, 19, as he crossed Ashton Road in Oldham.
Craig was on his way to meet his mother, Denise, who was at a nearby hairdresser's, when the incident happened. She was one of many bystanders who rushed to his aid.
He suffered a massive head injury and died four days later in hospital.
Pc Gareth Thompson said: "Hussain's driving that day displayed an arrogant disregard for anyone else who may have been using the road.
"He was driving at speeds of up to 70mph down a designated bus lane and was clearly in no position to take evasive action if required. Craig was innocently attempting to cross the road when his young life was cut short.
"I hope Hussain uses his time in prison to reflect on the heartbreak he has caused."
Witnesses to the horror crash in July said the Primera was racing another car, a blue Citroen Saxo, and both reached speeds of about 70mph.
Other witnesses described seeing both cars weaving in and out of the bus lane at speed.
Craig died at Hope Hospital, Salford, on 31 July.
The owner of the blue Saxo has never been traced.

Graig had just signed a modeling contract and the world awaited him.
I believe it time to find the other driver and prosecute him for aiding and abetting death by dangerous driving.

there should be no right of appeal and our taxes should not fund legal aid for such!!

He will be out in 3yrs or less and his 5 year driving ban will only then have two years to run. Driving bans should commence when they leave prison.

Pull the other one, they are JUST as bad as this driver jailed today - except he lived and his poor victim died.

What do you have to do to get 14 years if driving at 70mph in an urban area in a bus lane racing another car isn't it?

I've always pushed for severe punishment for illegal driver's. In fact, it's time to stop people getting their licence at such an early age!
No, it's time to punish these wanna be bad buoys and seize their assets ... give their cash to the victims!
No doubt their family would beg to differ ...
Rest in Peace

Driving is not a right - its a privilege!
Its too easy at the minute. There is no minimum experience required to take a driving test and these young drivers think they know it all because they can do the basics.
There should be a driving course instead of a test with a minimum of 200 hours experience covering all conditions and scenarios
