TRANSPORT chiefs have hit the streets . . . to keep traffic off the road.
A consultation trailer hitched to a Mercedes lorry rolled into Albert Square yesterday as part of a tour of the region aimed at getting feedback on plans for a peak-hour congestion charge in return for £2.7bn of public transport improvements.
A steady stream of visitors were given the chance to confront officials with their concerns and see maps of the proposed transport improvements, including a massive extension of the Metrolink tram network. They also put their views across in a Big Brother-style `diary room'.
The consultation comes ahead of a Greater Manchester-wide referendum on the plan, due in December.
Visitors expressed mixed views to the MEN after attending. Morgan Wolstenholme, a 28-year-old purchase ledger clerk from Castlefield, said: "I'm a cyclist and use public transport a lot. My main concern is whether the proposals are going far enough, because currently the amount of traffic on the road is ridiculous."
David Egerton, a 52-year-old internet marketing boss from Altrincham, said: "I think they are going to do what they want regardless of what we say.
"These so-called improvements will not benefit most people. My company is considering moving out of Manchester because the expense."
A female teacher from Bolton, who asked not to be named, said: "They have sent out quite a lot of information, but I'm a bit cynical. I assume it's a fait accompli since they must have invested a fortune in it already.
"I don't think Bolton is getting an awful lot out of it. We have no tram link, an appalling train station, and public transport is only any good if you stay in the office all day."
What do you think? Have your say.

I doubt many of the 'Me-Me(s) will bother though, they prefer to sit at keyboards and whinge...
For the record, as I'm still on my holibobs, I will catch a bus - or perhaps the train - from Didsbury village, and enjoy a few glasses of wine and a late buffet lunch, while in the city centre.
Cheaper (and less hassle) than parking; frees up my social options, and leaves the roads free - in your dreams - for those welded into their motor cars.
Don't you just love being in control?

You are selfish, shallow individuals, that care not a jot for those who don't use public transport - for whatever reasons - as long as 'you' don't have to contribute anything.
None of us want to pay more money - for anything. I certainly don't. But everything comes at a price.
There are no 'free lunches', and an improved public transport system is essential to ensure Manchester continues to be a sound, financial base for modern business.

And that is exactly what your comments are worth Laura The Borer, tuppence.

And, also 'Disbury Village' is what people call the area locally, why would you bother criticising someone for that?

Wee-ing in the wind, mate.
The majority on this MB can't see further than their Lada badge mascot.
(You do know your name has now been added to their 'hate list', don't you? ;-) Still, there's not much the dafties can do with your moniker...)
Must dash, bus to catch.

Nice how they hold these cosy chit-chats during the working day.
Roll on December when this will be booted right out!

If it means I can travel in comfort and with much less hassle from Saddleworth into the city using my rather expensive car then I welcome it. The sooner the better.

Also, where is the money coming from for the pro-charge posters all over town. Is there also money available for the those with different views to get posters up? Last time I checked we were still (just) living in a democracy...
Jay B, oldham (06/08/2008 at 14:40)
If we're selfish, shallow individuals then why are we going on about the whole of manchester competing against other cities close by? who i might add have scrapped the con charge proposals for their areas!
we're thinking about the job security of every single person who works in the greater manchester area!
John Ryle (06/08/2008 at 15:27)
This is not a consultation; it is a £3million (of taxpayers' money) propaganda exercise prior to the referendum.

Has anyone noticed the increasing number of new Stagecoach buses around Stockport? (I actually went on one yesterday and there must have been and I'm being generous, 1mm of padding in the seat - good job I've enough of my own)
Who needs a CON charge when a private company (as it quite rightly should) replaces its own ageing vehicles - or has a deal been done behind closed doors to recoup the cost in a few years' time? I wonder?
See the CON charge for what it is, a revenue stream and nothing more.
Nothing to do with easing congestion
Nothing to do with the environment
Nothing to do with attracting new business into Manchester
Everything to do with the Government reneging on previous transport initiatives
Everything to do with Government enforcing local road pricing
Everything to do with subsidising private companies with tax payers' money
Everything to do with charging as many people as possible
Will the referendum question be so succinct?
Go figure.

when really this should be the train companys resposibility to provide these extra carriages in the first place.
and you may notice greenfield stations improvements are listed as part of the items provided by the con charge. whats happening there at the momment? oh yes its already being done. its the same with oldham metrolink. its already passed and happening.
oldham like stockport, trafford and bolton get very little out of it really. they've just doctored it to make you think they do.
