WHEN it comes to the three Rs, pupils at Flixton Infant School are well above their peers, Ofsted inspectors say.

In addition to their achievements in reading, writing and maths, children at the Mardale Avenue school look forward to classes, are keen to learn and join activities with enthusiasm.

Inspectors described it as "an outstanding school where pupils thrive both academically and socially".

They said: "The key to the school's success is excellent leadership and management which leave no stone unturned in providing the best possible opportunities for pupils to achieve outstandingly well."

Children developed well and found the work interesting, the report added.  Inspectors also praised the emphasis on personal and social development, and said all pupils were well cared for and supported.

Parent comments were very positive, including one which said: "A great school, great teachers and a very happy and caring environment."

Irene Cooke, headteacher at Flixton Infant School, said she was delighted with the findings. She said: "We have worked hard to make sure that our pupils are given every opportunity to learn, develop and reach their own potential. To have this work and the effort of everyone involved recognised in this way is extremely encouraging."

Chair of governors Jane Horsfall said: "I am extremely proud of everyone at and involved with the school. By working together we have achieved so much and I am sure that we will continue to strive to improve so that we continue nurturing the development of our pupils."

Councillor John Holden, executive member for education, said Flixton's success was indicative of its committed staff, parents, governors and pupils.

However, the inspectors highlighted one specific area the school could improve - ensuring its youngest pupils made better use of its outdoor play and sport areas.
